Ok so I finally decided to watch the last episode. I got behind on SNW as it wasn’t available in the UK. Then I was in the middle of renovating/moving and so utterly exhausted. After that I decided I was so behind I might as well eke it out as a special treat 😛 I mean there’s only 10 episodes… that’s not a lot.

Anyway I got partway into it before a question occurred to me of “is this a callback to something that happened on TOS?” and a google said it was a parallel to the episode ‘Balance of Terror’ and so I took a pause of SNW and I’m now watching that first.

This is FASCINATING.

Idk whether to call it official fanfic or cinematic mastery but I am just 🤩 this is the sort of thing I love.

Lol after a miserable morning I have totally cheered myself up. Someone I know from an old fandom sent me a random message going “Do you watch Trek? Do you like it?” And I sent back a probably far too enthusiastic several paragraphs detailing the various shows and explaining what I thought the best ‘intro’ was.

I mean all Trek is worth watching, if nothing else but for the lore (well maybe could pretend season 3 and 4 of Enterprise were a fever dream that doesn’t exist) but I think some Trek is best watched with a certain mentality/approach.

Like TOS. I watch it, I like it, but for a brand new Trek viewer I would say maybe don’t start here. For a modern viewer I don’t think it would grab people. Go back and watch it with appreciation when you are a fan, but become a fan with something else you know?

(You may disagree, I could be wrong, just my feeling)

Anyway in the end I gave Voyager as my ultimate rec for starting with Trek because it’s a “classic Trek” and so it doesn’t have the shine of the newer Trek but it’s not as old as TOS or as rough as season 1 of TNG. Plus it’s the quickest way to get to Seven 😛

For new Trek I said Strange New Worlds was probably best. Discovery is amazing and I love it but it has its rough spots and has improved as time has gone on.

Anyway then when they are hooked they can go watch all the things.

With Discovery I always remember the utter rage I felt when Culber was killed. I actually quit the show mid-episode. I never do that. But I was just like “nope I am out”. They only enticed me back when they brought him back and then I fell in love with the Pike direction in season 2 and that got me back into Discovery. But I am hesitant to rec it as a first watch due to that. It requires some pre-warning first imo

@Purlturtle

See to me, from the beginning, it didn’t feel like Trek, because of the character dynamics. In all other Treks until then, the crew could always depend on each other. It was always them all together against whatever the challenge of the week was. It took me a while to pinpoint what bothered me about Discovery, and it was that, most of all. I was also incredible pissed off by them killing off Philippa right at the end of the pilot; I had not anticipated that and it gutted me.

Yeah I think that’s why the show got better as time goes on because there is bonding. I mean at the end of season two the crew launch themselves into the unknown, only having each other, out of loyalty and desire to do the right thing (aka core Trek) so yeah I agree totally.

I’m pretty sure I missed cool Star Trek stuff recently 😭 there are hints on my dash but I don’t know what it’s about really. I am consumed with moving hell.

4 more sleeps until I move.

The chaos will be over soon. I’ll just keep repeating that to myself until it’s true.

purlturtle said:  A trailer for S3 of Picard dropped. And September 8 is the “birthday” of Star Trek, since that is (I think) when TOS first aired, so there was a big “Star Trek Day” bash with red carpet interviews and actor reveals and whatnot.

Also, re: moving – you got this! And, German tradition holds that the first thing you dream of in your new home will come true. You can decide if you wanna adopt this tradition for yourself or not – it’s even okay to wait if your first dream was a good one before deciding 😅

galactic-pirates said:  @purlturtle thanks so much for reading me in 🥰 I think I liked the trailer but haven’t had chance to watch it yet. I feel like I have no brain space to process anything atm. My dreams are usually so weird I don’t think I can adopt that particular tradition. But it’s cool to learn about it!

purlturtle said:  Oh I got you! Moving is so stressful. Last time we did, we had a company do most of the work, and their truck barely fit (like, by inches) in the walkway that led to our door, but the driver chanced it anyway so the workers wouldn’t have to carry stuff so far. But it all went well and so quick and smoothly! Wishing that for you as well!

No Man’s Land!!!

WHY DID NOBODY TELL ME THIS WAS ONLY 90 MINUTES LONG?!

Ahem 😳 sorry I am a terrible audio listener. I have to be stuck in some kind of manual labour before I can even begin to hope to process. I was putting this off as I thought audiobook = 9 hours or so.

I can probably listen to this most Sundays when I do the ironing. I could have listened to this weeks ago 😭

Ok ok I’m gonna go listen now. I am prepared for the feeeeeeels 🥰

ensign tuvok: [making coffee for his captain]

janeway: you never brought me tea

I LOVE THEM

tuvok: ever since I entered the academy, I’ve had to endure the egocentric nature of humanity. you believe that everyone in the galaxy should be like you, that we should all share your sense of humour and your human values.

i mean… he’s not wrong tho. so far what I’ve seen on voyager, people like tuvok and seven are expected to behave and express emotions like the majority… it’s unsettling

That’s always been one of the ‘darker’ sides to StarFleet and the federation that I wish had been explored more. Instead everytime they touch upon it they always backtrack to “oh but we are right so that’s ok” and no?

I mean if StarFleet was just human then fine but it’s so intertwined with the federation which is supposed to be a equal cooperative? Like a United Nations of the stars as I understand it.

Have we ever seen a non human Captain? Do the non humans on a ship ever out number a human crew? Are they always the minority? Like that can’t be an accident. The admirals and leaders of starfleet are usually mostly human. Sure some of it is probably out of universe money as they don’t have to do makeup for too many characters but still :/

@lonely_knight13

I thought it didn’t mention anything about Janeway giving up? I remember the line Seven said was “Janeway went to bat for me, threatened to resign, but… I gave it up, went full Ranger.”

Well we saw how well “big play bluff resignations” went with Picard. Seven knew Starfleet was everything to Janeway so gave it up to save Janeways career. It was the logical thing to do. Also Seven sacrifices for her friends 😦

As a Stargate fan it cracks me up how close everything is in Trek. Like Voyager was looking at 70 years to cross less than half the Galaxy but they used to pop halfway into Pegasus in a few weeks 😂

I know Seven had some kind of emotional inhibitor but I haven’t seen all of Voyager. Is it removed at some point? I need to know for fic reasons.

It was part of her cortical node right? And Icheb gave her his I think? (I read wiki) so I’m not sure what that means. BUT I mean with the depth of emotion she felt re: Icheb’s death + how much Seven loves Raffi there’s no way it can still be functioning right?

On the other hand I do recall Once Upon a Time and how Regina removed her heart and still managed to break a curse with true loves kiss because even with her feelings gone she loved her son that damn much /sigh

Googles. Cool. As it’s no longer relevant I won’t be mentioning it. I was just typing something and went “waaait can I say that?” and thought I should check. Turns out yes I can. Whoo!

We don’t see it but then we don’t see a lot I guess. Do you think they have video games in star trek future?

I mean I guess by Picard time they had the holodeck which is like being in any kind of game you could imagine. But in Strange New Worlds time that wasn’t a thing.

I’m also guessing that the reason the only movies mentioned are old black and white ones is due to copyright? Because with how huge franchises are like Star Wars or Superheroes I’d expect references. Yet in Enterprise the only movies they show are old black and white ones.

People complaining about Seven sitting in the Captain’s chair. 🧐 Searching for logic. Can not find. Seven is a Ranger that’s like the definition of “looking out for the little guy” no? Does she have to do crime to do that? Sure, probably, but that’s the hero we need as the ‘establishment’ isn’t always right.

Captain Seven is the Captain we need IMO.

Plus! Plus! Importantly Seven is still Seven and why can’t people who are different see themselves in a hero? I’ll get super salty in a minute about autistic rep. Breathe self. Breathe.

They are talking about murder? Oh wait Bjayzl seriously, that’s the murder they are talking about? Yeeeeah I kinda don’t follow the fallacy ‘hero’ thinking of “killing is always wrong”. Bjayzl had hurt a lot of people and importantly as I remember it (haven’t seen season 1 since it aired admittedly) but they were still doing their Borg black market operation. Killing them would have harmed that. Not stopped it probably because bad guys are like hydra, take one down and two more take their place. It’s like whack-a-mole. But still I think it was justified.

Seven doesn’t kill people because she enjoys it, or for personal gain. What she did sure had high levels of revenge and was driven by pain. But there were benefits to a lot of people from it too. I’m talking about basically a world of espionage here – and a sci-fi world at that. Plus it’s fiction. Under those headings I support it.

@sayamantha

But this is Star Trek they’re not assassins and they’re not supposed to be vengeful in their killing. It’s a “if it has to be done” Sevens story is more complex than the other Captains. But at the end of the day that’s what people are “upset” about but they’re also very limited in they’re thinking of black and white and what the media has provided previous for female archetypes.

She could have taken her in got info to shut it down but it wasn’t about that for Seven it never was and it was clear from the moment it started playing out that it was about Seven killing her.

Personally this is a Captain I want.

That’s actually a really good point and something I hadn’t properly considered – genre expectations.

I was looking at it through the lens of “does this story make sense? / can I believe in it?” As opposed to “does this fit the genre rules of Trek?”

I still 110% support Captain Seven. I think challenging archetypes is a good thing and if there’s a touch more nuance in there, that’s no bad thing. But yeah I take your point. It is well made.
