I watched Ocean’s 8 again last night for like the … I don’t even know at this point, I just watched it again and not for the first time it struck me that there is absolutely no explanation (bar one) for Lou to leave the gala like this:

except now she did! Debbie didn’t have her part of the necklace as she’d planted it on Claude Becker but Lou had ALL the actual loot which they’d nicked from the display. So many diamonds. Next scene was Debbie drinking tea in a comfy robe. I’m just saying that’s coded for a lot of *cough* celebrating you know?

Went for the first time to a Lego store today and…

Keyboard smashing could not do it justice. It was just gah!

The pick-a-brick wall was disappointing as it was pretty much was all system bricks, they didn’t even really have any side stud ones.

But But But

Zomg the 3D hologram thing was the most amazing thing in the world!!!

Just hold up a set and it’ll make a 3D moving hologram as if it’s on top of the set you are holding. You can rotate it to see all angles and the minifigs move around like they are actually fighting or whatever. It was one of the coolest things I think I have ever seen.

I held up the Thanos Ultimate Battle (a set from Infinity War) and watched Iron Man fly around firing at Thanos and stuff it was great! They also had the new Endgame sets to look at. I confess I did wind up getting the Ultimate Quinjet Set. I mean it is still a store :p but oh wow seriously that hologram thing, so cool!

The look of the avengers compound in the trailers, all the non-battle bits like the bathroom. First Tony obviously has great taste because it looks awesome and second it gives me that itch in my brain that makes me want to write fic. I have no idea what but the look is inspiring somehow.

I don’t think this is spoilers, I mean I’m talking about the bathroom…

Just saw Captain Marvel.

The tribute to Stan Lee at the beginning made me tear-up as I hadn’t been spoiled for that. So idk lots of spoilers tags for people that haven’t seen.

Anyway I came home and stuck The Avengers on and right away I see Marvel really knows their shit as on the plaque it says “joint facility shield and nasa” and under the things it reads “Project Pegasus” like hella cool Easter egg planted 7 years in the past.

It kinda also explains for me at least how the tesseract was a thing in Captain Marvel because Dr Lawson was working for the government, they probably gave it her just like they gave it to Selvig.

Also the opening sequence with Maria being badass in the avengers is still one of my favourite moments in the marvel movies even all these years later. Possibly due to how much I was captivated at the time. I don’t think I breathed until it was over.

Anyway having watched Agents of Shield I knew no way the Kree were the good guys so if that was supposed to be a twist then oops. Oh and I think one of those Star Force Agents was the guys that went “who?” To Quill at the start of the Guardians of the Galaxy. I love stuff like that, how it all intermixes together.

Haha movie is still on and Coulson is bouncing on the phone as Nat wrecks some guys. I do love them.

So in summary Captain Marvel is an awesome movie, made even better by the deep connected universe.

Oh and the cat was gross.

8) do you prefer week-to-week content, or just binging all in one go?
To be honest whether I watch more than one episode at a time has next to no relation as to whether more are available. I find watching new things very taxing and so even when episodes are released week-to-week I’ll wind up accidentally stock-piling them. It’s not intentional, and it’s not that I don’t want to watch, it’s just that I need to have enough spoons to do my shows justice. So I don’t binge watch very much, sometimes I will with old familiar shows because 3 episodes is about the length of a movie. However, mostly I watch sporadically but on my own schedule.

13) what genre of TV show is your favourite?
Sci-fi absolutely no contest. Back in the day I would have said crime but that shifted once I discovered fantasy and sci-fi. These days if a show doesn’t have some kind of fantastical flavour then it doesn’t keep my attention.

22) if you could write your own TV show, what would it be like?
Oh geez how long do you have? Actually no I’ll try and do an elevator pitch. Think The Librarians meet Dark Matter (kinda). So artifact hunting in space with the background of a civil war. I’m actually thinking I might try and do this as a serialised web comic. It would be excellent drawing practice if nothing else.

34) what are your top 5 shows right now?
Erm *laughs* is anything still airing? This list changes constantly because I forget how much I love stuff and then I see it again and go ahhhhhh why did I forget you? I love you! I need to watch you obsessively for a bit. Anyway:

  • The Librarians!!! (man I could not love this show more if I tried)
  • Leverage
  • Agents of Shield
  • Killjoys

6. Favorite ships?
Well Rumbelle obviously and BraveWarrior heh 🙂 I am very loud about both of them to be honest. I know Merida and Mulan only had one episode but seriously I will ride and die off that. Oh and can’t forget Swanfire, there was a perfect story symmetry to their tale but alas only in shippers hearts did it live.

15. Do you believe in true love?
In fiction? Absolutely. In real life? I don’t know. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it. That’s not to say it doesn’t exist because I haven’t seen a lot of things, and I’m not saying I have to see something to believe in it, it’s just I’ve seen couples that have lasted – like my grandparents were married for nearly 60 years. My aunt and uncle have been married for around 40 I think. However, the way they interact, it seems more like love is a choice rather than the magical ‘true love’. I suppose that makes it more like real love, but true love is sort of transcendent, that kind of magical perfection which isn’t so real.

This didn’t make sense. I guess what I’m saying is. True love can be real love but it’s hard and it’s a choice and it’s not all romance and grand gestures and that swelling crescendo in fiction. So yeah I guess in that case I do believe in true love but only once it hits reality. Fictional true love is too unreal for the real world. Gah I don’t know! Sorry this has been a mess.

30. Which Neverland character would you like to see more of?
Tinkerbell! She was cast out by Blue. I would have loved to see how she made it from the EF to Neverland, why she went there, what she made of the place when she got there, what if anything any of the other fairies had to say about her de-winging, what Pan’s reaction to her arrival was, what she thought of him and his plans – I don’t know just everything. I think what happened to Tinkerbell shone a light on shady!Blue and I also liked how Tink saw that there was still good in Regina before anyone else. At the point Regina jumped from the tower, she’d already been condemned by shady!Blue, the so called ‘good’ fairy, but Tink reached out – Tink wanted to help! Tink’s goodness and her caring, the fact that she was a fairy and wanted to help, makes her unique and I wish her story had been explored more.

16. What are some of your favorite scenes?
One of my absolute favourites is season 2, episode 1, where Regina comes out of her house and says “you want to see your queen? Well here she is!” and slams her hands and nothing happens. Another is erm I forget the episode, but it’s where Belle is wearing Rumple’s coat I think and they are walking together on the street, going to the pawnshop I think. I always love to see that in gifs, I don’t know why but the visual just sparks in my mind.

20. Who has the best introduction scene?
I toyed with saying Rumple because I seem to recall he was locked up in the dungeon. Wasn’t there some discussion about going to see him, don’t let him see your face warning from the guards and then the “what’s her name?” BUT I think my final answer has to be Charming in the very opening scene, riding along that causeway. The visual was stunning and it hooked me on the show because it was just so damn shiny.

27. Which was your favorite adaptation?
I’m going to go with Red Riding Hood. I can hear Snow’s voice in my head with “Peter wasn’t the wolf”. I know Ruby being the wolf probably isn’t a new twist but I don’t know, it’s something that sticks in my head. I liked Ruby and I wish we had seen more of her.

32. What is your favorite place in OUAT?
Ooooh erm I’m going to say something quite random – the land of untold stories. I know that’s weird but the visuals were inspiring. They came onto the show at a time when I was wavering because as much as I love so much about Once, I was shall we say not best pleased with the writing at the time. The visuals of that airship and this whole new world and all the possibilities it brought up, I don’t know it just really struck me and it made me fall in love with Once all over again.

As I said above it was the visuals that first struck me about the show. Those shots of the land of untold stories reminded me of why I had fallen for Once to begin with, it was the inspiring nature of the fantasy world and then the clash with our world. It was the shots of castles and magic, horses in the forest and sword fights etc. So yeah I have a real soft spot for the land of untold stories because it is a visual exemplar of why I will always love Once Upon a Time. Certain characters resonated and will stay with me forever. I’m explaining this really badly but for me Once Upon a Time is like a well, it’s like an inkpot that will never dry, I can always return to it. It’s a touchstone of inspiration and those shots of the land of untold stories are a visual example of that, and they came at a time when I needed the reminder.

I just read something interesting. It was in a James Scott Bell book, 27 fiction mistakes, and basically went like this:

“I advocate a weekly creativity time. Half an hour at least to just play in the fields of your mind. You could play The First Line Game where you make up killer first lines, or play The Title Game, or The Killer Scene Game. You can grab a newspaper and come up with an idea based on an article.

Come up with your own games, but the point is to play. Get your brain frolicking and it will get stronger and happier. Then when you’re working on a project, it’s a healthy partner for you to have.”

I do get very focused on my projects and as much as I love them, they scare the hell out of me. I have built them up to mean things and so it’s like pulling teeth. I don’t like taking time out for other things as I feel guilty but maybe I shouldn’t, maybe indulging for a short time isn’t a bad thing.

This reminded me of the question “what brings me joy?” and how I should think about whether projects bring me joy, and what I could do to help myself. I confess that this is why I haven’t decided what I’m writing for April’s Camp yet as I’m deliberating about what brings me joy and what matters, and why things matter to me – what feeds the soul essentially I guess.

Anyway I don’t know I just wanted to share this 🙂

10) what’s one show you thought you’d love but turned out to really hate?
Oooh erm, hate’s a strong word and wow I’m not really sure. I was excited for Star Trek: Discovery, because everything I heard pre-watching sounded positive but I was cautious because Star Trek: Enterprise had burned me so when Discovery went bad it was almost like I’d been expecting it.

I don’t think I hate any show tbh which is why I’m finding it so difficult to answer. If I decide I don’t like something then I let it go, I don’t think about it, I’m just not interested anymore, and so I forget. Hate implies I still care in some respect and TV is a positive thing in my life, I try and only watch stuff I like so I don’t know, sorry :/

27) which actor do you think deserves an Emmy for their work on TV?
Oooh I could go for the classic and say Lana Parrilla because she really was utterly amazing as Regina. However I’m going to say something else – Zoie Palmer as the Android in Dark Matter.

She’s a robot but she’s a robot which has been upgraded with this empathy mod which allows her to have feelings and free will but doesn’t teach her about them at all. Also in the show there is another upgrade which basically makes her perfectly ‘human’.

So she has to play the shutdown robot with feelings she doesn’t understand and can only really display them through micro-expressions and awkward motions, she has to play the same character but much more ‘normal’ and then in season 3 they had another character – Doctor Shaw – who the android was modelled from, so that was another character completely and so she had to act opposite herself as two different people.

Yeah so in terms of ‘technical challenge’ there’s a lot. However I would argue that she deserves recognition because of the representation she offers. A lot of people see her as a representation of autism. The fact that she has the ability to pass and be normal and rejected it, in favour of being who she is, and that her crew respect and support that – and love her for who she is! it’s enough to make anyone cry.

41) if you could change 1 detail about any show, what would you change and why?
So I have to pick ONE show? and ONE thing? That’s impossible! Erm geez seriously my brain does not know where to begin with that.

Alright erm man I don’t know, erm – Stargate SG1. I’d change how the introduction to season 8 went down. I know Amanda Tapping needed some maternity leave but I really do think that Samantha Carter should have retained command of SG1 and that Mitchell should have been the new rookie. I love the character of Cam Mitchell, don’t hate him, he’s cool, but I don’t like that they basically forgot he wasn’t Jack O’Neill when they were writing (they admit this in episode commentary) and just yeah. I think Carter should have been properly in charge. I think the dynamic would have been better.

Also! Urk ok ONE thing, ONE. I have so many more /headdesk and it’s not like I don’t love stuff because I do, it’s just there are things that I personally would have done differently if I’d been show-runner.

It has to be Dark Matter.

My heart wants to say The Librarians because 10 seasons wouldn’t have been enough (especially as they were only 10 episode seasons!!!) BUT Dark Matter ended on a cliffhanger and while the creator has released some info to explain how the team “got out of that one” it didn’t answer any of the big over-arching questions related to the big plots that would have taken another season or two to answer. What are the Black Ships? What happened with the android insurrection? Come on guys I need to know! :p

3) have you ever quit a show before it finished? why?
A couple yeah. Basically I’ll put up with a lot, if I commit to a show then there’s obviously something I love about it so I’ll work with the material, I’ll come up with headcanons to explain away stuff, I’ll try and make it work. However I do have a limit and some shows have reached it.

Once Upon a Time for instance. I pushed through season 6 out of sheer stubbornness and I regret it to be honest because I saw some things that I can’t unsee. I wanted to give season 7 a try but they did the unforgivable. It’s like Star Trek: Discovery, I actually quit mid-episode of that because once I had confirmation that they really had done it – I was out of there.

5) what’s your comfort show?
You know what it is :p it’s either The Librarians or Leverage, watched a million times and I just don’t care. They are amazing and I love them 🙂

50) what’s one TV cliche you love?
“They are right behind me aren’t they?” – it’s a visual thing because you can see the obliviousness and then the slow realisation. Whereas if you have to explain it in fiction, it loses something hence why it’s a TV cliche and not just a regular cliche.

51) what’s one TV cliche you despise?
This is one is more general cliche to be honest but I hate it when shows twist everything so the men are the heroes and the women need saving. I know that this is because I’m watching “that kind of show” but to be honest – Castle – that show did not start out that way. It started out with Beckett being badass, at least that’s how I remember it. However it felt later on like Beckett became a support act. It was Castle that did the rough stuff in the finales, that was the ‘hero’ with the gun and took care of it. That’s an ABC show, I kinda expect it with all the CBS shows (NCIS, Hawaii 5-0 etc. as it’s chronic with them) but I had thought better of Castle which is why it stung I think.
