Killing off Rios saying he’s “lived a life” is just… it feels like a cop-out, a trite reason that I hate because it limits possibilities. Was Rios happy in the past? Maybe. But if they ever wanted to bring him back it would be difficult. If Guinan hadn’t dropped that sentence it would have been more open-ended. Rios was a good character who I think had more story to tell.

Plus it shows a double standard of care. To be honest with how Picard’s health was a theme in season 1, I thought he was going out then. I couldn’t really understand the “bringing him back in a robot body” thing given that Patrick Stewart is a real life human, who bless him is getting on in years, and I figured was probably sensible to ‘write him out’ so to speak to let the man rest. He led the way to carry the start of the show, until people got to know the new characters, and then he could bow and let the “next, next generation” take over but alas…

@Ericine

Rios left things for Raffi (and sometimes Seven) throughout his existence. Little messages and stuff. Bits of history that no one understands except Raffi finds them and is like oh, that was for me.

@sayamantha

DUDE SHE TOTALLY GOES LOOKING ONE NIGHT AT HISTORY JUST CAUSE SHE MISSES HIM AND THAN SEES SOME RANDOM THING THAT MAKES NO SENSE AND HE LEFT LIKE A TREASURE HUNT FOR HER

Reminds me of that Librarians quote “Steal something shiny and leave it somewhere interesting for me to find.”

Now Rios probably wouldn’t steal anything of note, and this is supposed to be a time loop I think? But with her ‘new’ knowledge of Rios + the past, it would be so great for Raffi to sudden go “oh!” as something that had never quite made sense slips into place.

Speculation regarding how Seven would be addressed in StarFleet.

How about Captain Musiker?

I mean obviously StarFleet is cool with no last name I mean it was just Commander Data, Commander Worf etc. but I would not be opposed to picture the scene.

Some new ensign is being taken to meet the Captain. They are nervous but reassured that while Captain Musiker has a reputation it’s all going to be fine. We’re thinking “Raffi is the Captain? Not what was expecting but sweet!” and then it pans to the bridge and Seven turns around. Hey if paperwork demands it, might as well just take the wife’s name 😉

Cue banter on the bridge about how they call her Captain Seven anyway maybe to avoid any confusion re: the Commander I don’t know.

Seven’s all “If I have to surrender myself to the inanities of StarFleet protocol then I will tick all their boxes to ensure we remain together”

And then a little smirk like “done running remember”

As someone who hasn’t watched all of Voyager yet. I’ve always been very confused about the few offhand references I’ve read about Chakotay and Seven. I had always dismissed it as him being basically the “only available regular man” as Tom was with B’Elanna, Harry is presented as being the green/young kid and the Doctor is a hologram.

I’m starting to get the dawning horror realisation that there might be more to it. At this point in time what the ever living bleep?? Maybe it’ll make a teeny tiny amount of sense if I watch it but, where’s that gif I need? The Eve Baird “no, no nope” one because so much that.

So my dawning horror is correct and it was actually a thing? 🙀

Ok well I may have to do a “so sad Voyager was cancelled after (whenever it was before it started)” “but there were seven seasons” “yeah no” lol.

I’ll watch the lot obviously but I’m comfortable with the “canon is a box of scraps” mentality and will freely ignore anything that well… just no. No.

Do you think everyone in the Confederation went along with it? Like I know Picard was EVIL, and we’re led to believe that President Annika and Head of Security Raffi, Colonel Rios attacking Vulcan, mad scientist Jurati etc. are all also EVIL

But… like everyone?

I get that the Confederation has been building for generations, and that this type of world is all these people know, but everyone? Nature vs nurture a bit I guess.

Just playing with the concept that if the Borg couldn’t erase Seven’s innate “fighting for the little guy” thing that she evolved into with the Rangers, that being born into an evil world maybe wouldn’t either. What if she ascended to the position to try and make the world better from the inside? Tearing it down as a rebel doesn’t work – the system is too strong, reforming slowly from the inside and making people think it’s their idea might be the only way

Hmm I may work this into my Confederation AU 🤔

Another thought!

Q did something to send them sideways into the Confederation world WITH their memories of the ‘real’ reality intact. BUT it wasn’t their ‘real’ bodies – they were in their Confederation bodies.

So I’m guessing that Picard for the duration of the show (up until finger snap back onto the Stargazer) wasn’t actually a robot? Unless he was also a robot in Confederation times. Which yes he was now I think about it.

Also if they were ‘possessing’ these bodies. Could the Confederation memories have still been there but just ‘supressed’ at the back of their consciousness? Perhaps using the old fiction staple of “it started to come back to them in dreams…”?

I’m not trying to steal anyone’s ideas. Just rambling about some wild thoughts floating in my head is all

Aaaaand this is what I love about prompts + fanfic. Same starting point of a “confederation AU” and then soooooo many different directions to take it in 🙂

Why is everything a process?

I mean I know why – because everything takes work.

But it really should be enough to want something and have it done.

Ignore me. I’m trying so hard and just feeling like I’m going backwards and it’s really discouraging 🙁

We don’t see it but then we don’t see a lot I guess. Do you think they have video games in star trek future?

I mean I guess by Picard time they had the holodeck which is like being in any kind of game you could imagine. But in Strange New Worlds time that wasn’t a thing.

I’m also guessing that the reason the only movies mentioned are old black and white ones is due to copyright? Because with how huge franchises are like Star Wars or Superheroes I’d expect references. Yet in Enterprise the only movies they show are old black and white ones.

People complaining about Seven sitting in the Captain’s chair. 🧐 Searching for logic. Can not find. Seven is a Ranger that’s like the definition of “looking out for the little guy” no? Does she have to do crime to do that? Sure, probably, but that’s the hero we need as the ‘establishment’ isn’t always right.

Captain Seven is the Captain we need IMO.

Plus! Plus! Importantly Seven is still Seven and why can’t people who are different see themselves in a hero? I’ll get super salty in a minute about autistic rep. Breathe self. Breathe.

They are talking about murder? Oh wait Bjayzl seriously, that’s the murder they are talking about? Yeeeeah I kinda don’t follow the fallacy ‘hero’ thinking of “killing is always wrong”. Bjayzl had hurt a lot of people and importantly as I remember it (haven’t seen season 1 since it aired admittedly) but they were still doing their Borg black market operation. Killing them would have harmed that. Not stopped it probably because bad guys are like hydra, take one down and two more take their place. It’s like whack-a-mole. But still I think it was justified.

Seven doesn’t kill people because she enjoys it, or for personal gain. What she did sure had high levels of revenge and was driven by pain. But there were benefits to a lot of people from it too. I’m talking about basically a world of espionage here – and a sci-fi world at that. Plus it’s fiction. Under those headings I support it.

@sayamantha

But this is Star Trek they’re not assassins and they’re not supposed to be vengeful in their killing. It’s a “if it has to be done” Sevens story is more complex than the other Captains. But at the end of the day that’s what people are “upset” about but they’re also very limited in they’re thinking of black and white and what the media has provided previous for female archetypes.

She could have taken her in got info to shut it down but it wasn’t about that for Seven it never was and it was clear from the moment it started playing out that it was about Seven killing her.

Personally this is a Captain I want.

That’s actually a really good point and something I hadn’t properly considered – genre expectations.

I was looking at it through the lens of “does this story make sense? / can I believe in it?” As opposed to “does this fit the genre rules of Trek?”

I still 110% support Captain Seven. I think challenging archetypes is a good thing and if there’s a touch more nuance in there, that’s no bad thing. But yeah I take your point. It is well made.

In season three to be honest if they do jettison Seven and Raffi I would be ok with that IF they got their own spinoff.

Like I’m worried they won’t get good screentime in season 3. So if we trade season 3 for their own show – that would be alright.

I’m watching Voyager and I have stars in my eyes 🤩 😍

“It is puzzling. You made me into an individual. You encouraged me to stop thinking like a member of the collective, to cultivate my independence and my humanity but when I try to assert that independence I am punished.”

“Individuality has its limits. Especially on a starship where there is a command structure.”

“I believe that you are punishing me because I do not think the way that you do, because I am not becoming more like you. You claim to respect my individuality but in fact you are frightened by it.”

I don’t know that just really resonated with me

Bearing in mind this is my first watch through of Voyager. Janeway at the moment seems to view Seven as like a pet. She wants to use Seven’s skills and her knowledge, she wants to feel good about teaching Seven how to ‘human’. Like Seven is a walking example of what a good person Janeway is. But I’m not getting the sense at the moment that Janeway really sees Seven as that individual. It’s more like someone who can’t be trusted to make the right decisions for themselves so Janeway wants control. That could be a bad read. I know a lot of people ship them. Thus far I’m not getting that at all

@Julie

Same, I never got a romantic vibe at all. I used to get maternal from Janeway and now I don’t even know anymore because it’s… complicated

Yeah I can see parental but in a bit of a self-serving kinda way. Like I’m sure Janeway cares. But Janeway isn’t the “I want what is right for you whatever that is” parent. She’s the “I want what I think is best for you as I know best” parent.

I just watched Prey so 4.16. Hence quoting from the end scene as that hit me hard. I think I saw myself in Seven’s words there about mixed messages and double standards and never quite understanding and always getting it wrong.
