I was thinking today about Jacob Stone and Eve Baird.

In the season 1 finale when they skip through alternate timelines Stone kisses Eve and she goes “no, no, nope, no, no” (side note: I love it when she does that) and so it made me wonder how they were together for 10 years in that timeline, but our Eve can’t even contemplate it.

So I do what I do when I’m thinking about things, I half remember stuff and then have to rewatch to firm up my memory. First thing – Santa’s Midnight Run!

Eve says that she spent 12 years in 12 different countries, and that doesn’t count the army bases she grew up on as a child. Santa says that maybe this is why she feels like she doesn’t belong anywhere (side note: thematically the desk in the library constantly resetting is a great angle on this, making Eve feel like she doesn’t belong).

Second – The Crown of King Arthur!

It’s first meeting time! This is the critical thing, this is what mostly makes the difference I reckon. When our Eve met Stone he was on the ground, she protected him and then he was instantly folded into a team structure. All those years in the military with the anti-fraternisation rules meant her mind considered him off-limits.

Whereas meeting 10 years earlier, when Stone said that Eve was fresh out of military intelligence training, that’s a whole different scenario. Eve wouldn’t have been so hardened, more used to taking orders than giving them AND most crucially they would have met as equals.

It’s that equals thing – that first meeting and putting people into boxes – that ultimately made all the difference I reckon. Our Eve met Flynn, was confused by Flynn, there was the push and pull and challenging one another. They talked in the forest, there was empathy, both of them lived for the job, they are both lonely. Eve is used to control and Flynn defies expectations but he’s genuine.

“I like the librarian, he’s weird but he’s interesting.”

Flynn might push Eve out of her comfort zone but he says what he thinks – quite literally “henge” anyone? – and so Eve trusts him enough to contemplate feeling feelings. Once open to the possibility it develops. Whereas in our reality with Stone she was never open to the possibility.

Also I can’t ignore a key fact in that Stone was different in the alternate reality! It wasn’t just that they met at a different time and place in their lives – 10 years earlier – but Stone made a different choice.

In our timeline he never showed up for interview, in the alternate reality he did. He took a chance, he didn’t just say that “I got a job, family business, responsibilities” and spend another 10 years writing under pseudonyms. Stone must have had more hope in his heart – been more open himself, he’d had 10 fewer years of hiding his true self after all.

Conclusion?

I ship Flynn and Eve so hard BUT I could totally see how Jacob and Eve could have worked in this alternate timeline. In fact I can actually see the potential in our timeline should Flynn ever have permanently been out of the picture.

As time went on Eve became less of a leader and more of just a team member. That was because from the very beginning, their first mission together “we’re not soldiers. we’re partners” – so Eve had to transition to treating them as equals. It would still need something to smash the box that Eve put Stone in, so she could actually see him in that light, but it’s definitely possible.

Stone is the most like Flynn in terms of his knowledge and his approach. He’s a bit more physical and a bit less scatty but no less passionate. Eve never picked a tethering partner after Flynn apparently quit, the most she said on the subject was “why not Cassandra?” after Stone and Ezekiel asked her to choose between them.

I thought a lot about who would be the best candidate to be essentially a librarian for a couple of thousand years (or until eternity). I went back and forth because I was thinking about balance. The library chose Stone, Cassandra and Ezekiel because they are all different. Like the finale said, the library lived in all of them for different reasons.

I wondered for a while if perhaps Stone was too much of a traditional librarian but I think ultimately that just solidifies him as the best candidate. He said it himself, as long as he was around the library would always have a librarian.

Eternity is a long time to be lonely. If Flynn really had quit and Eve had picked Stone to tether with. Yeah I think they would have transitioned from supportive best friends to lovers eventually.

(still prefer them as platonic best buds though, this was just a thought exercise)

#have I said how much I love this show today? because I love it#one day I will stop flailing over this show but that day is not today

Are all Librarians this much trouble?

Rick O’Connell (The Mummy Returns)

Yeah I can think of at least one heh

And I love her for it 🙂

#although trouble is probably the wrong word more insatiable curiosity and purity of heart

If it wasn’t for tumblr I’d never have dared watch the Mummy as I’m a wimpy wuss. I don’t do horror films and all the marketing I had seen suggested ahhhh scary.

Anyway it isn’t terrifying, certainly no worse than Pirates of the Caribbean and I watched that. I tend to look away during any really gross bits BUT my point is if I hadn’t watched it then I would never have seen the truth that tumblr used to sell me on the movie.

Evie and Rick are goals

Watching the Mummy Returns and Evie grabbing that sword and kicking butt, and then in the museum, when they shot their way out together.

This is what I said yesterday, established couple solving their problems together. Alternately the tumblr gif quote of “the couple that slays together stays together” 🙂

And I still have the rest of the movie to watch!

Fan fiction asks: 1 and 11.

1) What made you start writing fanfic?
Honestly? I think it’s just something I’ve always done. I didn’t write a proper fanfic beginning to end until I was 11 but I have notes of story ideas, or snippets (mostly dialogue) from a couple of years earlier. I don’t know when it started for certain because I only have digital files. If it was on paper I no longer have it. Certainly from when I was 9 and possibly younger.

Anyway, I think the impetus was fix-it. There was something not right and I wanted to change it. Bizarrely considering I can look back at stuff from when I was only 9 I had my shipping preferences sorted. Back then I don’t think I understood why I had a vehement dislike for certain ships, I just knew I didn’t like it. Now I’m an adult I can see that what I hated was lack of respect, or power imbalances. My childish fix was usually to split them up and to introduce an OC, who was a good listener, very supportive and probably didn’t have much personality of their own, instead did the “what do you want” dance a lot – I was only 9 *cringe*.

11) What kind of relationships are you most interested in writing?
Well I kinda got into that above ^^ I like equality, I like mutual respect. When writing relationships I usually conflate trust and love. I like it when a character that prides themselves on being strong, and never showing weakness, relaxes with their partner. I like that because they don’t have to be strong all the time as they trust that their partner won’t hold it against them. They can bear each other up, take turns being strong, they can be a team. They can let their partner see behind the mask, see their true self and feel loved for who they really are, not who people assume they are, or who they feel they have to pretend to be.

It’s odd really because the kind of relationships I’m most interested in are probably the ones that thus far I’ve written the least. Doing the whole “get together” thing is just more common in fic and instant attraction is a lot quicker. In terms of ‘get together’ I do prefer friends to lovers but slow burn is a time sink for writing. Anyway, I digress what I’m trying to get to is – established relationship. I suppose it goes back to the couple being a team. I want to write relationships where they solve problems together.

Fanfic asks: Ask me?

Fanfiction asks – 2 and 9!

2) Which of your own fanfics have you reread the most?
I don’t tend to reread my own work after its been posted, not unless I intend to do something more with it. So if a fic has a sequel then I’ll have re-read what came before at least once. Probably the one I’ve read the most is erm *thinks* probably a toss up between Painting Layers of Love and Between Two Fires.

9) What do your fic bookmarks say about you?
That I am a terrible person who never gets round to reading anything. Honestly I suck and I feel awful about it. Life threw me a massive curveball end of 2016 and I still haven’t recovered. These days with uni I am so brain dead when I get home I can’t even watch trash TV sometimes. I literally sit on the couch and stare at the wall, I can’t cope with anything more. I probably could read a lot more than I do (I mean I’m answering these right now, so I could be reading!) but I put a lot of pressure on myself. If I read then I want to leave a good comment, and to be honest it’s the “being too tired to leave a good comment” thing that really stops me, and now I’ve just got out of the habit.

6) Name three stories you found easy to write
Hmm.

Short fics usually pour out of me in one sitting because there’s a particular thing I want to say. They are usually ‘character pieces’ aka not much plot, just the character reflecting on what’s happened. So I guess I’d say these fics like my two most recent: Monstrare Monere or Ghost of a Memory, were fairly easy to write.

However like I said that’s because of the nature of the kind of fic. In terms of something longer with more plot (aka a proper fic imo) two immediately come to mind: The Beauty and the Tragedy and Between Two Fires. The former just poured out of me in one day, and the latter hits so many of my buttons in terms of what I like the most it was just an absolute joy. For a third? I’m trying to think of a chaptered one, though those are usually difficult at some point as it becomes rather inevitable with the length. Hmm, Right Kind of Wrong perhaps? I did write that very quickly because the show made me angry, I think I rode that anger all the way hehe.

7) Name three stories you found difficult to write
Oh boy haha. When I first read these two questions my instinctive thought was “what stories did I not find difficult” hence the rather long answer above, as I had to think it through myself. So just three? Erm. How about True Love Ways, Dream Come True, Painting Layers of Love … and lots more hehe 🙂

Fanfic asks: ask me?

Watched Black Lightning last night, 2×06 so that’s one episode behind I think.

Anyway, woah

I called it (the whole world called it) and so they didn’t even make it a thing, just bam Gambi was back. Second major mysteries batman, like what is going on???

aaaaand that is my one criticism. I think this show is incredible. I adored how season 2 started with the theme of consequences and actually addressed the fallout from the end of season 1. Most shows just brush it under the carpet and move on but they didn’t.

BUT they have introduced so many new angles, everyone is separated and ugh I know that’s probably the point but dammit it makes my heart hurt.

Lynn is hurting desperately, Jefferson should be with her. Everyone seems to be ignoring Jennifer and I predict that’s going to blow up soon. Anissa is constantly going off on her own and I applaud what she’s doing but dammit I much prefer when characters talk to one another! Gambi well … if he has access to an armed drone, surely he could drop a note to Jefferson?

Plus with all the new angles there isn’t the time in the episodes. Like when did we last see Garfield school? Jefferson was demoted, those kids in the hallway who were fighting were suspended/expelled, there were issues and then dropped because of this element metal in South Freeland new thing. It feels like they are trying to pack too much in, like each episode should be twice as long or something because there’s not enough time to do everything justice.

Also am I the only one slightly disappointed that Grace is a meta/tied to this South Freeland story somehow? I was really hoping that they would take Anissa and Grace and sort of echo Jefferson and Lynn, one powered, one not and explore that dynamic. It would have been a learning experience for everyone because Anissa and Grace aren’t Jefferson and Lynn. So Anissa and Grace would react differently but at the same time, would history wind up repeating itself?

I guess they felt that Grace had to be tied to the plot somehow because they hadn’t brought her into the storyline enough otherwise. It’s a shame, I think they should have. Grace could have represented the perspective that is lacking – of someone on the outside. Henderson could have been that but he’s barely a guest star at this point. So Grace could have been like a mirror, letting the Pierce family see how Black Lighting/Thunder etc. are seen by those who don’t know the truth.

Then you know tropes aren’t bad. There could have been the cliche secret identity issues, with Anissa making bad excuses and then my personal favourite resolution, where finally Anissa decides to come clean and Grace could have just rolled her eyes “I figured it out ages ago, took you long enough to tell me”.

Also I haven’t forgotten that whole “bringing people back from the dead” plus the tattoos of the dead storyline in season 1 – what was up with that? Can we get some resolution please?

Ok I got to know

Does anyone else write hundreds of posts which basically boil down to “screaming with frustration, misery or despair” and then delete them because don’t want to seem whiny or spread negativity?

It’s like how do I purge this awful unsettled feeling? Answers on a postcard.

I’m really starting to get sick of being marked down for formatting.

I will format any way they want – but they need to tell me what it is first!

Seriously I am not a mind reader. Taking marks off for not doing it the way they exactly like it, when they have never previously said what that is, that is just impossible and unfair.

It feels like attempting to jump through invisible hoops, or that the goal posts keep shifting unexpectedly. There is zero consistency even within the faculty and it is driving me mad.

15 Questions

@mariequitecontrarie thanks for the tag! 🙂

1. Are you named after anyone? Funny story. I completely changed my name when I was 18. Literally all I wanted for my 18th birthday was a deed poll, I was in the solicitors office on my birthday signing the papers. So … I picked my own name! Obviously I chose it because I liked it, because it felt right etc. but inspiration has to come from somewhere right?

My first real fandom was Without a Trace, and that had a character called Samantha Spade – hence how I first really heard the name ‘Samantha’. I’d been out of that fandom for a couple of years so I didn’t name myself after her, that’s just how I heard the name BUT Samantha Carter – Stargate. I did not discover this until 2014 (6 years later) but it’s like fate, or serendipity or something, because if I have a fictional role model then it’s her. I’m absurdly pleased that we share a name and should I have known about Stargate when I was 18, then I definitely would have named myself after her.

2. When was the last time you cried? Wednesday, big meltdown, very bad.

3. Do you have kids? Nope. Not now, not ever.

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot? I don’t know. It depends on my mood. I have been told that I do have quite a dry sense of humour so maybe?

5. What’s the first thing you notice about other people? Proximity to me (do I need to move out of the way?), then what they are wearing.

6. What’s your eye color? Brown

7. Scary movie or happy ending? I do not do scary, so definitely 110% happy endings.

8. Any special talent? Erm I hate these kind of questions. Ugh, erm, I don’t know, I have a talent for self-destruction certainly. Oh! I have crazy fast reflexes, that’s kinda positive.

9. Where were you born? In apparently the most disgustingly dirty hospital in England. The stories mum tells *shudder*

10. What are your hobbies? Writing, digital drawing, pen and ink drawing, painting/colouring, 3D modelling, Lego

11. Do you have any pets? Nope

12. What sports do you/have you played? Best part of two decades ago I played cricket for half a minute. More recently? I do enjoy swimming laps, I’m not particularly fast or anything but the repetitive motion is nice. Unfortunately it’s difficult (and expensive) to go to the swimming pool so I don’t do that anymore.

13. How tall are you? 5′2″

14. Favorite subject in school? History, English

15. Dream job? Author. But more realistically something freelance, where I can work from home, communicate with clients through email.
