Phil Coulson (Agents of Shield) for history and a side order of diplomacy.
Tony Stark (who needs no introduction) for science and problem-solving.
Jenkins aka Galahad aka the worlds oldest soldier (The Librarians) for warfare and diplomacy.
Two (Dark Matter) which I can get away with because they DID time travel to our time šfor kicking butt and flying planes, or you know spaceships hehe
*sighs* ahh I feel safer already š
Edit: because I just made myself laugh at listing Two as the pilot – thatās like saying āMelinda May is just the pilotā š
Sooooo I just learned thereās going to be a sequel to Maleficent (October release) and Iām caught between being interested and being cautious.
The first movie wasnāt all that BUT it explored good and evil in a way that fairytales usually shy away from. The fact that the TLK was between Maleficent and Aurora says it all tbh. The fairies didnāt know how to take care of a child and so Maleficent had watched over Aurora all her life, keeping her safe, only because she was the āinstrument of her revengeā but actually she grew to love her like a mother loves a child.
Iād love to see what happens next but I really hope that they donāt butcher what I thought was a great message. I mean Maleficent did awful things but it explored the reasons behind them and that actually there were two sides.
Just rewatched Curse of the Black Pearl and I feel like giving a shoutout to Elizabethās Dad. Sheās in the captainās quarters and he sits outside and says something like āIām proud, you made a good decision today BUT sometimes even a good decision if made for the wrong reasons isnāt rightā – he totally knew that Elizabeth only accepted Norringtonās proposal to save Will (everyone knew that, Norrington, the crew, it was pretty obvious) BUT he not only knew it, he was circling round to sayingĀ ādonāt go through with it, I know itās not what you wantā despite the fact that Norrington would be his choice for Elizabeth.
So it seemed to me that he was putting his daughters feelings ahead of what he thought was right for her. Then later when Elizabeth pretends to faint, he realizes what she did and rolls his eyes in a fond exasperated manner. Then he talked about piracy for good reasons and basically forced acceptance that Will was Elizabethās choice, that he would go free despite freeing Jack and attacking soldiers etc.
I donāt know it just struck me that especially for the time period, that was quite unusual in fiction. Much more normal (unfortunately) to write a dad that thinks he knows best, and doesnāt respect his daughters opinions. With Elizabethās dad it was quite the opposite really.
I also need to give a shoutout to Norrington, who like I said must have realized that Elizabeth was just using him to save Will, that he was her second choice even if she did marry him. He then was embarrassed in front of all his men but dealt with it with dignity and honorĀ āthe man that forged this blade would bring such care to every aspect of his lifeā that was probably the nicestĀ āyou better treat her rightā threat Iāve heard. He could have gone all macho but he didnāt.
aaaaand Iām going to have the music stuck in my head for ages. I always do. Incredible soundtrack.
I watched Oceanās 8 again last night for like the ⦠I donāt even know at this point, I just watched it again and not for the first time it struck me that there is absolutely no explanation (bar one) for Lou to leave the gala like this:
to then change into posh party clothes to meet Debbie, seeing as Lou wasnāt part of the group that left the gala smuggling the diamonds. Lou left by motorcycle (exhibit A above), she didnāt need to dress up at all, except she did because exhibit B here:
to meet Debbie who was obviously dressed-up in the gala clothes. Debbie was across the street at this point when Lou tugs at her very low-cut top, which definitely draws the eye *cough*
So conclusion? The only explanation is that they needed to be dressed like they were going to the same place for some post-heist celebrating. After all
āIs this a proposal?ā
āBaby I donāt have a diamond yetā
except now she did! Debbie didnāt have her part of the necklace as sheād planted it on Claude Becker but Lou had ALL the actual loot which theyād nicked from the display. So many diamonds. Next scene was Debbie drinking tea in a comfy robe. Iām just saying thatās coded for a lot of *cough* celebrating you know?
Thank you anon! You picked some awesome questions, this was super fun š
8) do you prefer week-to-week content, or just binging all in one go?
To be honest whether I watch more than one episode at a time has next to no relation as to whether more are available. I find watching new things very taxing and so even when episodes are released week-to-week Iāll wind up accidentally stock-piling them. Itās not intentional, and itās not that I donāt want to watch, itās just that I need to have enough spoons to do my shows justice. So I donāt binge watch very much, sometimes I will with old familiar shows because 3 episodes is about the length of a movie. However, mostly I watch sporadically but on my own schedule.
13) what genre of TV show is your favourite?
Sci-fi absolutely no contest. Back in the day I would have said crime but that shifted once I discovered fantasy and sci-fi. These days if a show doesnāt have some kind of fantastical flavour then it doesnāt keep my attention.
22) if you could write your own TV show, what would it be like?
Oh geez how long do you have? Actually no Iāll try and do an elevator pitch. Think The Librarians meet Dark Matter (kinda). So artifact hunting in space with the background of a civil war. Iām actually thinking I might try and do this as a serialised web comic. It would be excellent drawing practice if nothing else.
34)Ā what are your top 5 shows right now?
Erm *laughs* is anything still airing? This list changes constantly because I forget how much I love stuff and then I see it again and go ahhhhhh why did I forget you? I love you! I need to watch you obsessively for a bit. Anyway:
The Librarians!!!Ā (man I could not love this show more if I tried)
5) whatās your comfort show?
AnsweredĀ hereĀ š
10) whatās one show you thought youād love but turned out to really hate?
Oooh erm, hateās a strong word and wow Iām not really sure. I was excited for Star Trek: Discovery, because everything I heard pre-watching sounded positive but I was cautious because Star Trek: Enterprise had burned me so when Discovery went bad it was almost like Iād been expecting it.
I donāt think I hate any show tbh which is why Iām finding it so difficult to answer. If I decide I donāt like something then I let it go, I donāt think about it, Iām just not interested anymore, and so I forget. Hate implies I still care in some respect and TV is a positive thing in my life, I try and only watch stuff I like so I donāt know, sorry :/
27) which actor do you think deserves an Emmy for their work on TV?
Oooh I could go for the classic and say Lana Parrilla because she really was utterly amazing as Regina. However Iām going to say something else – Zoie Palmer as the Android in Dark Matter.
Sheās a robot but sheās a robot which has been upgraded with this empathy mod which allows her to have feelings and free will but doesnāt teach her about them at all. Also in the show there is another upgrade which basically makes her perfectly āhumanā.
So she has to play the shutdown robot with feelings she doesnāt understand and can only really display them through micro-expressions and awkward motions, she has to play the same character but much moreĀ ānormalā and then in season 3 they had another character – Doctor Shaw – who the android was modelled from, so that was another character completely and so she had to act opposite herself as two different people.
Yeah so in terms ofĀ ātechnical challengeā thereās a lot. However I would argue that she deserves recognition because of the representation she offers. A lot of people see her as a representation of autism. The fact that she has the ability to pass and be normal and rejected it, in favour of being who she is, and that her crew respect and support that – and love her for who she is! itās enough to make anyone cry.
41)Ā if you could change 1 detail about any show, what would you change and why?
So I have to pick ONE show? and ONE thing? Thatās impossible! Erm geez seriously my brain does not know where to begin with that.
Alright erm man I donāt know, erm – Stargate SG1. Iād change how the introduction to season 8 went down. I know Amanda Tapping needed some maternity leave but I really do think that Samantha Carter should have retained command of SG1 and that Mitchell should have been the new rookie. I love the character of Cam Mitchell, donāt hate him, heās cool, but I donāt like that they basically forgot he wasnāt Jack OāNeill when they were writing (they admit this in episode commentary) and just yeah. I think Carter should have been properly in charge. I think the dynamic would have been better.
Also! Urk ok ONE thing, ONE. I have so many more /headdesk and itās not like I donāt love stuff because I do, itās just there are things that I personally would have done differently if Iād been show-runner.
2) if you could have saved one TV show from cancellation, which one would it be?
Tough one because there are choices. Ultimately though no contest tbh
It has to be Dark Matter.
My heart wants to say The Librarians because 10 seasons wouldnāt have been enough (especially as they were only 10 episode seasons!!!) BUT Dark Matter ended on a cliffhanger and while the creator has released some info to explain how the teamĀ āgot out of that oneā it didnāt answer any of the big over-arching questions related to the big plots that would have taken another season or two to answer. What are the Black Ships? What happened with the android insurrection? Come on guys I need to know! :p
3) have you ever quit a show before it finished? why?
A couple yeah. Basically Iāll put up with a lot, if I commit to a show then thereās obviously something I love about it so Iāll work with the material, Iāll come up with headcanons to explain away stuff, Iāll try and make it work. However I do have a limit and some shows have reached it.
Once Upon a Time for instance. I pushed through season 6 out of sheer stubbornness and I regret it to be honest because I saw some things that I canāt unsee. I wanted to give season 7 a try but they did the unforgivable. Itās like Star Trek: Discovery, I actually quit mid-episode of that because once I had confirmation that they really had done it – I was out of there.
5) whatās your comfort show?
You know what it is :p itās either The Librarians or Leverage, watched a million times and I just donāt care. They are amazing and I love them š
50) whatās one TV cliche you love?
āThey are right behind me arenāt they?ā – itās a visual thing because you can see the obliviousness and then the slow realisation. Whereas if you have to explain it in fiction, it loses something hence why itās a TV cliche and not just a regular cliche.
51) whatās one TV cliche you despise?
This is one is more general cliche to be honest but I hate it when shows twist everything so the men are the heroes and the women need saving. I know that this is because Iām watchingĀ āthat kind of showā but to be honest – Castle – that show did not start out that way. It started out with Beckett being badass, at least thatās how I remember it. However it felt later on like Beckett became a support act. It was Castle that did the rough stuff in the finales, that was theĀ āheroā with the gun and took care of it. Thatās an ABC show, I kinda expect it with all the CBS shows (NCIS, Hawaii 5-0 etc. as itās chronic with them) but I had thought better of Castle which is why it stung I think.
I love this thing when it comes round! Itās such a happy thing š
#1 Rumbelle
look at these two dorks – how could you not ship them? Rumple is so full of self-loathing and Belle brings light to his life physically, metaphorically and Rumple in turn totally supports Belle! He lets her be herself, he respects her. Iāve always thought thatās why Belle first went ?? I like this guy! Because he respected her more than her dad/Gaston ever did.
#2 Bering and Wells!!! Whoop, whoop!
My newest obsession I love them so much! Myka is the only one who could have talked HG down. They have so much cool stuff – the grappler! With the āyou can owe me oneā š and how they just get one another, and they work together so well and HG sacrifices herself kinda and urk (I still havenāt seen past that because Iām so shook! It was such a perfect shippy thing but then not because of the death but I know that thereās going to be time travel or something and nothing can take that moment away! That moment when Myka said it wasnāt worth losing HG, and HGās last act was to save Myka. I just canāt even gah!
#3 Evlynn
I love them! I love them! Theyāve had what 3 TLK? I have written metas about them, about why they are so well suited. āI like the librarian, heās weird but heās interestingā and āI love you more than learning itselfā. The push and the pull and the acceptance. I mean sure thereās frustration, they are two individuals used to being alone, used to making the decisions, trying to then function as a unit and thereās friction but thereās also so much love and caring right from the very start. Eve just got Flynn. āIf that was the right thing to do then youād be doing it, not reading about it.ā Oh I could go on and on.
#4 Fitzsimmons
They are like the dictionary definition of best friends to lovers (although Philinda does give them competition on that score). They have been through so much, their bond and then their love has been tested every way imaginable. Fitz dove through a hole in the universe for Jemma, and Jemma basically dove into like the mirror universe for Fitz. Theyāve travelled in time, theyāve fought together āIāve saving England from evil robots with the man I loveā and the whole team ships them.
#5 Do I have to choose because I have more than five? Ok, ok, Iāll obey the rules š
#5 Jack and Irina
Oh their dynamic is – just wow. I picked them because even though itās been probably years since I watched Alias, I have returned to their ship as inspiration in my writing repeatedly. Itās the old trope of āI committed the ultimate sin – I fell in love with the markā – they were on opposite sides, Irina betrayed him, but oh boy did they still love one another. Even after twenty years, and all that pain, they still couldnāt help their feelings.
U for the letter-based ask list?: Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.
OMG I love this question thank you!
*two seconds later*
OMG I hate this question! ⦠but still thank you so much! š
Haha, honestly talking about my faves is š š but choosing between them??? Iām sure you know what Iām talking about heh.
Right erm wowzer ok.
Once Upon a TimeĀ seeing as thatās the fandom we share š
To absolutely nobodyās surprise, sitting in one of the top 3 spots is this guy – Gold/Rumple. Why? Because I identify with his fear, his insecurity, his self-loathing. I understand the feeling. Heās relatable basically despite being very different from me in all other respects.
Regina, oh Regina, I love her so much. Why? Because of the depth and the layers and the complexity and the whole villain to anti-hero journey and the self-loathing that came when she stopped repressing her conscience. Like I said depth and layers. She did wrong, she knew it was wrong when she did it but she did it anyway and nothing will ever make that right. Fascinating character.
Nothing like a villain. I know, I know, you probably expected me to say Belle as my third choice and I nearly did but my feelings towards canon Belle are, letās just say complicated to say the least. So anyway why Cora? Because she fascinates me. If I was still in the canon-divergence fanfic business I have several ideas Iād love to explore. Itās such a shame she got killed off so quickly. She was a schemer, I love those, reminded me of a Derevko (anyone else seen Alias?). Her motivations, her relationships – just fascinating.
Ok because of gifs this got long so cut time
Warehouse 13because picking three is easy š
Undisputed favourite, I could not love her more, I wish I could write all the fic. Another character who straddles the line between villain and anti-hero. She works with you, she works against you, always has her own agenda. She is utterly brilliant. HG Wells everyone.
I have to be honest I prefer Myka away from Pete as thatās when she really shines. Sheās resourceful, sheās smart, sheās tough. I liked it in season 2 when she and Claudia went on a mission together and she was a confident agent, who gave Claudia good advice and just was very professional.
So last choice for Warehouse 13 has to be Claudia because I relate to her a lot. She is terrible with people, very awkward, babbles when sheās nervous. Sheās also really smart, a total geek and extremely capable with stuff sheās good at – like computers.
So last fandom, what shall I pick? Stargate? No thatās like choosing which limb I want to keep. Erm *thinks hard*
Dark Matterbecause itās slightly easier but I do still love most of them!
Itās the boss lady! She is badass, she is smart, she is the leader of the crew and that takes a toll, she has the burden of authority. She cares, and with the memory wipe their true selves came out, and then we got to learn about their history and that just hurt. Everything she went through made her the ruthless Portia Lin, underneath all that still was Two. Portia had the heart and had to live with everything. Once again I wish I could write all the fic ESPECIALLY AS THE SHOW GOT CANCELLED AND IāM STILL VERY BITTER!
OMG the android. Her journey is incredible. She doesnāt understand the social world, she has emotions that her programming canāt quantify. Then what is so so important is she gets an āupgradeā that makes her instantly human and she rejects it. She chooses to be herself and what warms my heart/makes me cry is how her crew are happy about it. They accept her for who she is, even if they sometimes donāt know what to do when the android says awkward stuff.
Three. He pretends he doesnāt care but really does and he doesnāt hide it very well. Thereās no artifice with him, he says what he thinks and heās actually very loyal. Heās a good friend. Plus itās super funny how his quarters are basically an armory. Heās a stereotype but itās a good one.
Just watched the new Tomb Raider movie. I confess I enjoyed the older Angelina Jolie movies more. They were just more fun.
Although I suppose the timing was different. Jolieās Lara was a seasoned adventurer and had the skills to match, this new one was like an origin story so I guess it makes sense that she spent most of the movie screaming in pain.
Iām sorry I guess I just like slick escapism more than gritty quasi-realism /shrug
