11 Questions

@britishkitten27 thanks for the tag šŸ™‚

Under the cut because of gifs and length.

1) Worst job you’ve ever had? I once worked as a web programmer for a small tech firm. My supervisor liked to tell me on a daily basis how useless I was, and how anyone could do my job. I quit after two months unable to take it anymore, and then the firm filed for bankruptcy so I never even got paid.

2) Current TV show? I watch a lot of different shows. Do you mean current favorite? That would be Stargate. Current favorite which is still airing? That would be Once Upon a Time. Newest show that I’ve picked up? Star Trek: Enterprise. Last show I watched? Also Enterprise.

image

3) Childhood favorite book? I really loved the Harry Potter series as a kid but by the time the seventh book came out I was quite disenchanted. I still loved the potential of the world but I’d noticed all the plot holes and the less savory implications. I liked the Hardy boys, Redwall, Enid Blyton, I’m not sure I could pick an actual favorite.

image

4) Planes, cars, boats or coaches/trains? Boats definitely, I love the ocean and sailing. If I had the money and could get reliable internet, I would live on a boat.

image

5) Favorite seasons? Heh when I first read this I thought you meant TV seasons – one track mind! Autumn/winter because all the bugs die and I can snuggle under blankets without getting too hot.

image

6) Favorite boys & girls names? I don’t know, that’s difficult because names are usually tied to associations. Say a name and think of a person, or in my case – characters. I’m going to change this question to favourite characters instead, sorry, not sorry. Ok favorite male character (I have to pick one?) – Nicholas Rush. Favourite female character – Regina.

image
image

7) Favorite flower? I hate flowers, they attract bugs but I suppose I like flowers that look like flowers (I know that doesn’t make sense). Something like roses because they don’t have the ugly stamen thing (I think that’s what it’s called) in the middle.

image

8) What is your most prized possession? My iPod, it keeps me sane and they don’t make them anymore (it’s about 10 years old) and I want to keep it safe and working forever.

image

9) Best school-time memory? School wasn’t really that great for me. It’s hard to think of any really good moment. I think maybe when I got nearly a perfect score in Resistant Materials for my GCSE project. I got 101 out of 105 and they were bound to search for something to knock marks off, it was as perfect as anyone was likely to get. It was my hardest subject because it didn’t come naturally and so I actually felt like I earned that mark, I had to work really hard and that made it worth more.

image

10) Dream job as a child? Writer, still my dream job actually.

image

11) If you could live in another time, what time would you choose and why? The future because I bet they have even more cool technology. I look at what we have now and I can’t imagine living without it. Our technology has evolved so much in such a short space of time. In 50 years what will we have? In 200 years we will have our own spaceships? I want a spaceship.

I just recently did this and tagged people, so I’m not going to tag people again so soon. Anyone can do it who feels like it though šŸ™‚

@bookwormchocaholic thanks for the tag šŸ™‚

The last book I bought? I’m not sure I can remember, it was so long ago. I’m really terrible, basically all I want to read these days are books I write, or fanfic. Plus books cost money and I’m really picky about what books I buy.

Oh hang on I’ll check my goodreads … Stargate SG1 – Two Roads. I like my TV tie-in books, which thinking about it, it’s like official fanfic – oops.

For the next round – The last five TV shows you watched. I’ll tag @woodelf68, @mrgoldsdearie and @golden-rumbelle hope you guys don’t mind the tag. If you don’t want to do it then I’m sorry and just ignore šŸ™‚

11 Questions

@golden-rumbelle thanks for the tag šŸ™‚

I’m going to put it under the cut as I’m going to include some gifs and plus long text posts are annoying.

1) What’s your star sign? Taurus

2) Assuming that you’re following my blog because you like Rumbelle, how and when did you first start liking them? The moment I watched Skin Deep, which was when I first saw Once last summer. I got netflix and started trying out new shows I’d not had access to before. I binge watched the first four seasons before season five started in September.

3) Did you watch any works of Robert and/or Emilie before OUAT? If so, which one/s? I’ve never seen Emilie in anything else. However, I had seen some SGU, The Full Monty and The World is Not Enough. I hadn’t really realized though that it was Robert Carlyle. I didn’t become a fan of his until Once, and that is actually what made me watch more SGU and then I became hooked on SGU on it’s own.

4) What’s the time right now? 16: 09
5) Lucky number? 47

6) Favorite time of day? Why? The afternoon because I tend to be more productive for some reason and I like being productive.

7) Do you have a place you’ve always wanted to visit? I like the idea of visiting lots of places but in reality I’m very much a homebody, I don’t really like going anywhere. The reality of lots of places scares me, like Australia or the Caribbean looks so pretty in pictures and I absolutely love the ocean. However, there’s lots of scary bugs and animals and I just couldn’t do it in real life.

8) Favorite ice cream flavor? I’m allergic to milk so it would be fake icecream and I’d have to go with the Vanilla Coconut one in the fridge. It is the nicest icecream in the world and I use it regularly to bribe myself to do stuff because it is so definitely worth it.

9) What’s a Rumbelle/Anyelle fic that you’ve really enjoyed reading/writing? Oh man I can’t pick just one that I’ve really enjoyed reading. Absolutely no way. I should probably make up a rec list at some point of my favorite fanfics but I’d be terrified of forgetting one. I’ve got a brain like a sieve sometimes. Plus, I feel bad about the authors I don’t list, it feels mean.

I’ve written half a dozen fics so far, I’ve got more in progress still on my hard drive. I’ve enjoyed writing most of them at times, I’m not sure I have a favorite. Although I’m quite partial to my first WIP, which might forever remain unfinished and unposted. It’s calledĀ ā€˜Her Happy Ending’ and I confess I re-read it sometimes because it cheers me up. It’s one of those things that I wrote in a burst of enthusiasm and now it feels like it wasn’t actually me that wrote it, probably because I enjoy reading it, so how can it be mine? I don’t know if that makes sense.

10) Best birthday gift you’ve ever received? I got my iPod for christmas, otherwise it would be that. I’ve had it 10 years and I hope to merlin it never breaks because you can’t buy them now and the new ones are rubbish in comparison. Wow, this is ungrateful, I know what I got this year and last year but I wouldn’t class either gift asĀ ā€˜best birthday gift ever’ and I can’t remember what I got for my birthday in the past. Well this is awkward …

11) Can you read/write/speak in (a) different language/s? Which one/s? No which I am very embarrassed about. I would love to learn a language but I am awful at it. I drove my teacher mad at school because I wanted to knowĀ ā€œwhy?ā€, I needed rules to learn and of course language is illogical a lot of the time. I used to know a few different programming languages but aside from PHP which I remember enough to do a few basic things, I have forgotten them because I’m so out of practice.

By background angst I just meant Belle’s issues with Moe, the accident, her coping with being blind, her anxiety, the way they keep accidentally pissing each other off or hurting each other’s feelings, that stuff. But I am kinda keen to see Belle open up about that stuff to Gold, which will inevitably end up with her being pretty upset. Maybe Gold kinda unintentionally hits on something and it sets her off, and that sparks the conversation.

Ah ok phew – panic over. I had thought you meant some sort of background angst that I hadn’t seen which would split Belle and Gold up. This is all fine, it’s stuff they can deal with together and I have plans for all of this šŸ™‚

I mean yeah they will fight but it’ll just be temporary, like in chapter one. I’m not very good at writing people apart for a long time, I just want to bang their heads together and order them to talk. Thank you!

Okay so in my town, there’s this one homeless man that sits at the drive thru exit to our In N Out, which means it’s mega high traffic, and I went today and sure enough he’s there and he’s smiling and waving to every single car that passes, even though practically no one even bothered to look twice at him.
3. I watched Piglet’s Big Movie again. My best friend who just moved out of our college house is the only person in my real life who’s ever bothered to notice that I only watch Pooh movies if I’m really upset. She’d see me watching them and bring me a cookie or a hug. I miss her.

Thanks for tagging me šŸ™‚

1. The World is Not Enough (relatively recently)
2. The Legend of Barney Thomson (several months ago)
3. The Full Monty (years and years ago)

Unfortunately those are the only three Robert Carlyle films I’ve seen. I really want to watch others (California Solo comes to mind heh) but they aren’t on netflix or Amazon Prime. I do have the 24 movie on DVD but I’m only on season two of the show, and I think I might be confused if I watched it.

10 things I love

Thanks @sarashouldbestudying I appreciate the tag šŸ™‚

I’m going to use gifs so I’m going to put most of it under the cut.

1) Writing – I need to write, like I need oxygen to breathe practically. It’s part of my identity, spinning stories and writing them down is what I do, it’s who I am. If I’m not writing, then I feel like I’m wasting time. A ridiculous notion given how much I procrastinate but yeah if I’m not writing I feel like I should be, it’s in my head, it’s constantly at the back of my mind.

2) Music – I love pretty much all music. It is so very rare that I don’t have something playing. I can’t stand the quiet, I find it really distracting as I get hyper alert to any random noise. My iPod goes with me everywhere. Plugging in and having the consistent sounds of a song, rather than the sound of people all around me, is the only thing that stops a panic attack sometimes.

3) Stargate – This gets an entry on it’s own because I love it that much. I never get tired of it. No matter my mood, no matter how I feel, I can always put Stargate on, relax and it cheers me up even if only for the 40 minutes it’s on screen. The three shows weren’t perfect but they did a lot right and the expansive extended universe of potential, gives me a lot to think about when I can’t sleep at night.

4) Once Upon a Time – Another entry on it’s own. Now this show decidedly isn’t perfect but even if the plot quite often leads something to be desired, the characters and the world have so much potential, that it just sets my imagination on fire. To be honest I think that is what I look for most in anything I watch/read – potential. Plus this is the only show where I’m active in fandom, Rumbelle is why I joined tumblr and Once Upon a Time is what I fill my dash with.

5) Other TV/Movies – There’s a lot of stuff I like. I have a rather big DVD collection and I rewatch a lot. I could write a big long list but I probably shouldn’t. So my top ones that I keep coming back to would be Marvel Movies, Fools Gold, Princess Diaries, Hustle, Flashpoint, CSI, NCIS etc.

6) Cute puppy pictures – I don’t like dogs in reality, mostly because I have a problem with unpredictability and all animals are inherently unpredictable. I’m really nervous around dogs, I know that they aren’t going to hurt me but yeah, well I’m nervous around anything alive really. However, I love dogs in abstract – they are so sweet!

7) Technology – I do like new shiny gadgets. I never get them because it’s illogical, always better to wait until they have been out a while and the bugs have been worked out. Usually don’t get them after that because, no need, only get stuff if it would be of use. However, that doesn’t stop me from drooling over the shiny’s and reading through their specs on the internet, or looking at them in the store.

8) The Ocean – I absolutely love the sea, the crashing of the waves, the smell of the ocean breeze. I am terrified of seagulls so going to the seaside is always tricky. However, I do love the sea. If I was a gazillionaire I would live on a boat probably.

9) Swimming – I do my best thinking around water. Get ideas in the shower, or preferably while doing laps in the pool. I’m not that fast, but I used to go 3x a week and do 40 laps or something. I haven’t been able to swim in a year now because of an injury and I miss it so much.

10) Blankets – I hate the summer so much because I can’t do anything about being too hot, winter is awesome, most of the bugs are dead, nobody bugs me about going outside and I can huddle under blankets. I love blankets, they are so comforting and snuggly.

I’m sick, it’s NaNo so I will laughingly call it the NaNo plague but right now it’s just a really nasty sore/swollen throat. I’m procrastinating on writing so I figured I would ask myself some of those questions from earlier because why not? It’s all good fun.

Feel free to ask me any others if you are curious šŸ™‚

H: How would you describe your style?
I write third person and I’m most at home with an ensemble cast. I like to be able to move between plot and subplot, and have a few different POV characters, so that I can tell the story from multiple angles.

K: What’s the angstiest idea you’ve ever come up with?
Warning Major Character Death!

Basically Rumple wakes Belle with true loves kiss and that breaks the curse of the dark one, rendering him powerless. A short time later Hook finds out, perhaps from Henry as the author, that Rumple threw Milah into the river of lost souls. Rumple is just crossing the street when Hook kills him. Emma and the rest of the ā€˜heroes’ say that Rumple had it coming, no matter that he was powerless now and vulnerable, it was justice not murder.

Anyway, Belle has their child and when it’s just a few months old Storybrooke is hit by disaster – again! Belle goes to help the ā€˜heroes’ defend the town because it’s the right thing to do and she gets killed. That kid is now an orphan and only a few months old, nobody wants it because it’s the ā€˜spawn of the dark one’ but they do at least take it far enough over the townline to ensure that it’s found.

The kid grows up in the system and when they are 18 Henry finds them, because he thinks that the kid should know where they came from. However, that is some legacy. From the kids point of view, their dad was murdered before they were even born, and their mother cared more about playing hero than about them. They ask if their parents left them anything, that might sound mercenary but they have nothing right now. Henry admits that there was quite a sizable estate (Rumple had owned most of the town) but that there was now nothing left. No-one paid rent to a dead man and everything else had been ā€˜seized’.

I never know quite how to end this. I’m quite partial to time travel. With Wicked Witch 2.0 (Zelena’s daughter) kidnapping the kid to use as leverage against Rumple in the past (it’s a spare kid, could be an easy way out of that pesky second child contract) and takes the kids heart so if Rumple doesn’t play ball, can kill them at anytime. This also means that the town gets to see how screwed up the future could be and fix it and make for a happier ending (see I suck at angst, I like my happy endings) but to be honest, it could just end with Henry leaving the kid with knowledge of their origins.

That would be sad – no more happy endings.

O: How do you begin a story–with the plot, or the characters?
Characters – always! Characters drive plot. I mean there is obviously a certain amount of ā€˜both’ with this question because it’s ā€œPut Character into Plot = see what happensā€ but it’s about the characters journey, it’s about their actions, their emotions.

If the plot doesn’t start and end with characters then I personally feel it’s quite shallow, there’s not much depth to it. Like watching a movie and it’s all special effects, there would be nothing memorable about it. When I watch something, for me to be a real fan, a character has to grab me.

P: Are you what George R. R. Martin would call an ā€œarchitectā€ or a ā€œgardenerā€? (How much do you plan in advance, versus letting the story unfold as you go?)
I do full scene by scene outlines of any long story. For a short oneshot, I just write and do scenes as I think of them, one after the other until the end. However, if something’s complex, I would write myself into a corner if I don’t plan it out.

That doesn’t mean I’m completely married to the outline. I can add in extra scenes if I realize that I need to do that when I start writing. Sometimes I combine scenes and of course for any serious work I do multiple drafts. That means after I’ve gone through and found all the problems, brainstormed all the fixes, I write up a new outline. That would have the new, changed, moved scenes in the right places.

I need my outline. It means when I sit down to work I always know what is coming next. I’m never sat there thinking ā€œI don’t know what I’m writing.ā€ because if I have questions about the plot and I don’t know them when I’m planning, I’m sure as hell not going to know them when I’m writing. Planning it all out, lets me solve problems before they become issues in the draft.

U: A pairing you might like to write for, but haven’t tried yet.
Swanfire! I love Neal and so it seems like a natural thing. I am hoping to include Swanfire as a side pairing in Nightwalkers. I haven’t planned that fic yet, though I’m itching to do so. I hope I can include it, if I can’t then I might need to think of a Swanfire oneshot or something.

The War Within Chapter 3: though Rumple believes Belle can’t hear him under the sleeping curse he’s still baring his soul and telling her all the things he should have told her, including why he needs his curse. Please tell me Belle can actually hear him saying all this?

I love you! Sorry but I’m quite excited, you are my first TMI Tuesday person. Thank you so much for asking! šŸ™‚

Your question made me think actually. In my plan Belle couldn’t hear him but I just went back and watched Charming wake up Snow, and Emma wake up Henry. Snow says ā€œthe glass coffin gave me pauseā€ and Henry said ā€œI love you tooā€ in answer to Emma’s preceding line of ā€œI love you.ā€ Now, we haven’t really seen people interact with someone under a sleeping curse – just the kiss. I don’t think canon really addresses it one way or another.

What we do know, is that Hook’s father was under a curse for a hundred years. The nurse who took care of him, fell in love with him somehow (I don’t quite get how, given that she wouldn’t have known him) and woke him with TLK. Now, I suppose the nurse could have learned about him, but if he had no connection to the outside world, then how could he possibly reciprocate? One thing we do know about TLK is that both parties need to feel the same way (why it doesn’t work with amnesia etc.)

So, in answer to your question. I am going to change my plan because I like this idea better. Yes Belle can hear him but not clearly. It’s going to be indistinct, like a dodgy radio connection. She’ll hear more than enough to get the idea. I wasn’t going to have the first Belle scene until chapter five, but I’m going to add a new scene to chapter four.

Thank you so much!

Nickname(s): I don’t have one
Star sign: Taurus
Height: 5’1 (I’m short)
Time: 10:38am

Last thing I googled: ā€œHow to trick my PC into turning off without updatingā€ because Microsoft doesn’t seem to understand that no means no. I do not want the windows 10 update, do not make me have it!

Favorite music artist: This is so difficult! I listen to music all the time, I have a few favorite artists but to just pick one .. I don’t think I can. Plus it changes, I get something new and then I listen to it repeatedly for weeks/months. So what is the current list? James Blunt, One Republic, Maroon 5, My Chemical Romance, Nickelback, Plan Three, Shinedown, Sick Puppies and Thousand Foot Krutch.

Song stuck in your head right now: I read this question and it’s like a mixtape just went off in my head. First I had ā€œGet the Party Startedā€ by Pink, then ā€œHappy Endingā€ by Mika, then ā€œHow do you loveā€ by Shinedown.

Last movie I watched: Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Last television show I watched: NCIS
What are you wearing right now: Star Wars pajamas
When did you create this blog: 2 months ago, beginning of May 2016.

What do you post: Once Upon a Time and Stargate are my big fandoms. Within that I’m a writer so mostly my fic, reblogging other fics, writing quotes/tips, talking about writing. I do reblog gifsets, mostly of Nicholas Rush but sometimes other stuff if I feel like it.

Do you have any other blogs?: Not on tumblr
Do you get asks on a regular basis: Nope, barely ever but then I’m new and so it’s to be expected. I put up my first TMI Tuesday last week and I will do so every week that I can just because it’s fun. I don’t expect I’ll get any asks for weeks, if ever but I confess I like to join in. I see TMI Tuesday posts on my dash, so I just throw mine up there, maybe one day someone will have a question or a prompt, that would be really cool.

Why did you choose your url: Back in 2005 I created a personal site, for my coding projects, my art, my fics etc. and I called it – Still Searching. It seemed to make sense to use the same name for the blog here. The 47 is because that is my favorite number. I got that from Alias, I still remember Marshall saying early on in season one ā€œI want to get it to 47 because that’s a prime numberā€.

I’m always a bit nervous tagging people, which is strange because I love being tagged. Anyway, I’m not actually going to tag anyone but feel free to answer the meme if you would like.

You know it just occurred to me – and yes I should be writing and I’m procrastinating, why did you ask? šŸ™‚ – that I could answer a couple of questions off that fic meme, whether anyone asks me or not.

I just think a couple of couple of them are really good questions and I feel like it. So why not?

Feel free to ask my any others if you are curious šŸ™‚

1) Describe your comfort zone—a typical you-fic.
Canon divergence. Where there was a pivotal moment and canon goes one way but I can say ā€œwhat if?ā€ and then take the story down a different road. This is basically all I have ever written.

I find writing canon-compliant ā€œmissing momentā€ type deal, very difficult and I would never choose to do so if I had a choice. I think it’s the desire to ā€œfix itā€ in me, because obviously if I can’t change anything, just write what happened, it’s quite frustrating. I might have written one canon-compliant thing about 10 years ago but I struggled to end it because I couldn’t give it a happy ending. I like my happy endings.

I have never written a complete AU before but I have a couple in the pipeline and I’m looking forward to that. It should be really fun. I’ll get to do what I love in other AU fics and bring in some show stuff but in a different way. I always enjoy that. I just hope I can pull it off.

11) Is writing your passion or just a fun hobby?
This is what I wrote on my Camp NaNo profile this year:
ā€œI love writing, I just literally do. I write for a job (sort of) and I write for fun. I write all day, everyday if possible and then more on weekends. I love stories, I love characters. I wish I wrote faster than I do because I have so many ideas and there’s just never enough time. Can we invent something so I can plug my brain into the PC and make stories appear? That would be very cool.ā€
So in answer, it is most definitely my passion.

13) What’s the best writing advice you’ve ever come across?
NaNoWriMo – in a nutshell. Basically stop being a ā€œone dayā€ novelist, saying that ā€œone dayā€ I will write a story because then that will never happen. There will always be other priorities, it will always get pushed to ā€œwhen I have more timeā€ and so if you want to do it, do it now.

A story will never come out on the page exactly how you hoped. In your mind it’s amazing and incredible because it’s so full of limitless potential. The real world, the harsh reality of the page, it sucks but that’s the magic of writing. Everything is fixable. If you have the first draft, then you have a place to start. You can take something and make it incredible, you can’t take nothing and do anything with it because nothing is nothing.

Everyone starts somewhere. If you have a story to tell, then tell it – the world needs your novel.

14) What’s the worst writing advice you’ve ever come across?
ā€œWrite what you knowā€ because how does that even work? Last time I checked we weren’t living in magical worlds, or fighting aliens. I write what I want to read, I write what I love and then I share it because I hope other people will love it too. If I just wrote ā€œwhat I knewā€ then I wouldn’t feel anywhere near that level of passion because my life is normal and unremarkable.

18) Do you use any tools, like worksheets or outlines?
I write up a full scene by scene outline for any long story. My oneshots I tend to just start writing and just write what comes into my head. However, for anything longer, it’s usually more complex, and I need to plan it out. If I don’t outline then I wind up writing myself into a corner. Plus outlines are helpful because when I open the document I always know what I’m doing next, I don’t ever stare at a blank page because I don’t know what I’m writing.

24) Have you ever deleted one of your published fics?
Yes. I quit fanfic about five years ago and I had one outstanding WIP and I felt really guilty about it. However, I was never going back, and to be honest nobody was reading it anyway, so I just deleted it and tried to pretend like I hadn’t done that.

As a reader I usually tick the ā€˜completed’ box and only read fics that are done. There is nothing worse than liking a fic and then it never being finished. As a writer, I felt like such a hypocrite for doing that. Thankfully, like I said it wasn’t like it was popular. If I had been then I would have made myself finish it.

30) Do you accept prompts?
Yes.

35) Would you ever kill off a canon character?
Never say never, but I find it quite unlikely. I don’t like reading character death fics, so I can’t imagine why I would ever write one. I suppose if it was just a minor character, or one everyone hated, then I might. I guess for my upcoming WIP ā€˜there has been a murder in Storybrooke’ I am going to have to kill somebody. It won’t be anyone I like though.
