TMI Tuesday: Wow, look at all the ficlets you wrote this week! I’m impressed! “If you really loved me” Rumbelle– how often does Gideon pull out the ‘but Neal Nolan…’ line to get his way? Do you ever hear reports from the Charmings that Neal uses the ‘but Gideon Gold…’ line on them? Just how nervous are you about the trouble those boys might get into as teenagers?

image

(OOC: Thank you!)

Rumple: *snorts* I should think young Master Nolan would know better than to invoke the name Gold in his house.

Belle: Erm actually …

Rumple: Well I never. *smirks* I wonder what the Charming’s thought about that? I imagine if the pirate heard…

Belle: *does that not impressed look she does* Storybrooke is quite quiet these days. I’m sure that Gideon and Neal will get into a few scrapes but hopefully it’ll just be typical teenager high spirits. So I’m not nervous. Rumple?

Rumple: We’ve already seen what a mix of Charming and Gold can do in Henry. I wouldn’t underestimate them sweetheart.

Belle: Henry was a lovely boy and he’s turned into a good man … although I do take your point. Thank you, I wasn’t nervous before but I am now.

I’m not procrastinating, you are *shifts guiltily* I got tagged in a couple of things ages ago and I love getting tagged so I’m going to do them 🙂

So first thank you @rowofstars I have no idea what this one is about, so my answers are pretty random to be honest.

4) Do you have a special talent? Nope
5) Favorite movie? The Princess Diaries or Captain America: Civil War
6) What did you want to be when you were young? A writer
7) Dream vacation? As it’s a dream and I can go absolutely anywhere, then I’d love to go to Storybrooke. Not Steveston – Storybrooke, hopefully when nothing is attacking the place. In reality? I would like to send everyone else in the house on vacation, and I would stay home and have a staycation with some peace and quiet.
8) Something you hate? Lots of things. Right now? I’m thinking that big ball of radiation we call the sun – I loathe summer. It’s unpleasantly warm and I won’t open my windows because I hate bugs even more than I hate overheating. They make me so paranoid.
9) Favorite quote? “I can fix a bad page, I can’t fix a blank page.” – Nora Roberts.
10) Biggest fear? Failing.
11) What is your current job? Freelancer.

Moment Verse!Belle: Did you ever get another moment? Please, try again. I get the feeling that Mr. Gold is shy, but interested.

(OOC I don’t know if you saw this ficlet)

We’re going to the movies! At 6pm! Tonight! What am I going to wear? I was so eager for him to agree that I just dismissively said it was a multiplex and it would be fine but what if nothing is on? What if it’s sold out? What if …

Oh no, oh no, we didn’t agree where to meet, we said 6pm but am I meeting him at the shop or is he meeting me here at the library? Maybe I should go and ask him? But I don’t want to bother him and make him want to take back the invitation. The library and the shop are opposite, so if I just linger on the sidewalk, then that should be fine.

I hope it goes ok…

11 Questions

@sarashouldbestudying thanks for the tag 🙂

1) What was your favorite cartoon as a kid?
Depends when as a kid and what qualifies as a cartoon. When I was really little I liked Thomas the Tank Engine and SuperTed. Awww SuperTed I’m getting nostalgic now 🙂 When I got a bit older I liked X-Men: Evolution.

2) Do you like math?
I love math! I wish I was better at it because I think it’s really cool. So much of the world can be broken down into formulas and equations. We can understand a lot of the cosmos thanks to math. Math drives science. Math is the reason that so many things work, well math and physics, like it’s why bridges stay up and how planes can fly and so many cool things. I used to get really frustrated at school. I am very much an applied math person, and I wanted to know what use the different math had, I just got told to shut up and get on with my work and then I struggled. I always did so much better if I knew the point, if I could think ‘this is the math of architecture’ or something. I guess that’s just how my brain works.

3) Sweet or savory breakfast?
What counts as a sweet breakfast? I mean I like crunchy nut cornflakes, I guess they are a little sweet because of the honey. I also like raspberry and vanilla soya yogurt, which isn’t exactly bitter. Erm, so I don’t know how to answer but I eat those two things.

4) Why did you join tumblr?
For the Rumbelle fandom. I was browsing some blogs anonymously and then I saw the ‘Rumbelle is Hope’ event was going to start May 2016, so I took the leap because I wanted to join in basically.

5) Is there a trope you really really like in fics?
I don’t know. I guess … is established relationship a trope? I will never ever get tired of reading my OTP being happily married. It doesn’t have to be fluff but I like them dealing with problems together. I like all sorts of tropes really, they have become tropes for a reason it’s because they are good things 🙂

6) Do you like your name, or do you prefer people to shorten it/use a nickname?
I really don’t mind. Most people call me Sam, rather than Samantha, but I’ll answer to both and I let people choose.

7) What’s your favorite time of the day?
That depends. Probably on a general basis, after breakfast in the morning. If I’m going to have a good day, it’s that time that usually determines that. If I start off being productive, then I can usually carry it through. Plus I stand the best chance of tackling harder tasks at that time, as I’m hopefully not too tired as I’ll have only just got up, and breakfast should be giving me energy. That’s the theory anyway.

8) Do you think high school is/was a good period of your life?
Tough one. I felt more accomplished at high school because basically if I put the effort in, then I was rewarded with good grades. Good grades made me feel better about myself, so I liked that. High school generally? No, it really sucked for so many reasons.

9) What’s your ideal way to spend a day off of work/study?
Ok I’d have the house to myself. I wouldn’t feel guilty because perhaps I’d done everything I was supposed to for a change. I’d have decided the previous day that I was taking the time off, so it was an allowed thing and not just me being lazy. Then I’d probably spend the day doing a mix of watching TV/movies and playing video games.

10) Do you like doing chores?
Does anyone like doing chores? I like it when they are done because well I have to do them, so it’s nice not to be looking around and seeing everything I haven’t done. However, on the other hand they are an ‘all the time thing’ and it’s just never-ending. I hoover the house, a couple of hours later and it’s already starting to get grubby again. I do laundry and that night I generate more, it just doesn’t stop. There’s never a “yes I’ve done it!” point because there’s always more to do. So I don’t like that about it at all.

11) What do you think is the first thing people associate with you?
I’m not sure. I suppose it might depend on whether people meet me in person or they just know me over the internet. I’m guessing either way the answer is likely to be my anxiety. I suppose if someone met me in person it’s possible that it might be how attached I am to my iPod, or that none of my clothes fit me. I’m really not sure.

15 and 17 for the meme you most recently reblogged?

15) Your guilty writing pleasure?
Erm … references, I snigger a lot. It’s like an inside joke and it’s entirely possibly that I’m the only one that gets it but it amuses me greatly. I love working in snippets of dialogue, or things that happened in other shows that I love (especially Stargate) into my Once fanfic. I know that’s probably weird. I don’t know why but I get a kick out of it.

One of the first fics that I remember just flowing, where I thought to myself “man I love writing!” and where I didn’t move all day I just wrote and wrote until my hands were sore – that was a multi-crossover fic. I know, they are the bane of the fanfic world and everybody hates them. It was over a decade ago, it was probably rubbish. I smashed together 4 of the shows that I watched and loved at the time and I had a blast. Predictably it didn’t get any comments but I didn’t care, I enjoyed myself immensely.

I actually miss the easy joy that pervaded my soul when I wrote that fic. I haven’t felt like that in a long time.

17) Would you describe yourself as a fast writer?
Compared to who? Fast is relative. I mean when I’m actually writing (so not at the moment) then compared to some people I’m fast. If you compare me even on my best day to someone like Worry, then I’m pretty slow compared to them. There are some people that do NaNo in November who would make Worry look slow. So it’s impossible to say, plus the inherent judgement is slightly problematic.

I mean if I say “no I’m slow” and somebody else looks at my writing and thinks “wow they are fast” and they hear that I think I’m slow, then it’s possible that might make them feel bad. I don’t think it should because it’s not a competition, we all just do the best we individually can. I cheer for those that write 10x more than me just as hard as I cheer for those that write 10x less. I don’t even know if I’m making sense now, I feel like I’m talking in circles.

Anyway, I suppose I would say that I think I’m a slow writer even on my best day for one simple reason – I think I should be faster. I don’t feel like I’m as fast as I could be and I get frustrated and angry with myself, even on my best day, for not doing more. So no I wouldn’t describe myself as a fast writer.

Cool Asks for Fic Writers: 3, 5 and 10?

3) What is your absolute favorite kind of fic to write?

I have two answers for this. First the absolute honest answer which is whatever I write that I’m passionate about at the time. I know that’s a copout answer but honestly my favorite fics to write are the ones that just flow. Where I sit and write for hours because the story wants to be told and I love it and I don’t think it’s shitty (or if I do I’ve decided I don’t care) and I basically just have a blast. Basically the best buzz I get from writing is when the writing goes well and I feel satisfied with myself that I’ve accomplished a good amount for the day.

In terms of actual fic? I confess I enjoy my sci-fi. Probably some of my least popular fics are my Rumbelled Stargate episodes, I knew that when I wrote the second one and I did it anyway because it’s a guilty pleasure. I also love my tropes. Between Two Fires hit so many of my “I love this” buttons that I’m surprised I’ve left it at a oneshot. I think I only did that because I had several ideas that would have led to remixes, and sequels and prequels, and well … *hides in box of shame* I like getting kudos for my writing. I started another couple of WIP’s around that time and they were a lot more popular in comparison. So I shelved the ideas intending to “come back to them later” and of course I get new ideas at the rate of knots so I never have. Maybe one day.

5) How many words can you write if you sit down and concentrate intensely for an hour?

Around 2000. That has to be on a good day though. My stats on 5 min sprints are much better than that, but my problem is I can’t sustain the pace for very long. Concentrating intensely for an entire hour is difficult. I need to train my brain to do it, and it’s a bit like going to the gym. Slow and steady my focus improves, and then the second something happens and I get off the writing treadmill bam it’s like I’m back to square one, just like fitness the second I stop going to the gym. I dread to think what my stats would be like at the moment if I tried writing for an hour…

10) What inspires you the most?

TV probably. I mean I write fanfic so on the surface that makes sense but it’s more than that. Anyone that knows me can testify that at some point I will have said “oh yeah like that thing on X episode on Y show” because I relate stuff to things I’ve watched.

I mean can anybody come up with ideas in a vacuum? I certainly need something to spark ideas. It can be anything, it doesn’t have to be an actual prompt. It could be something I see on the street, or a memory I have of something that happened to me, or a story that someone told me about something that happened to them. Prompts inspire me in whatever form they take – actual word prompts, inspiration aesthetics, random pictures. Things that aren’t intended to be prompts as well like the world in general.

The Write Ask Meme with 55 questions: # 4, 23, 41. :)

4) Do you have any writing habits/rituals?
Probably. Definitely. I am very much a creature of habit. I can’t write without music, so I either need speakers or headphones. I need water and I prefer to start writing with coffee (I think it’s the aesthetic). The coffee goes on the right and the water on the left. I open the word document for the day on the right monitor, and I open the main document, plus any planning docs on the left. I always write in word, always fix the margins to be 2cm around, always change the font to calibri.

I can write on my laptop if absolutely necessary. I still need music. I still need water. I still need my multiple documents, though the screen real estate is a lot more limited on the macbook. What I listen to depends on my mood more than what I’m writing. If I’m in a good mood I’ll listen to whatever I want. If I’m fairly ok and just need some focus then I put on my “writing playlist”, if I need to get pumped up for it then I put on my “adrenaline” music. If I’m sad and struggling then I have music for that as well. I don’t listen to the specific music at any other time so it’s pretty strongly associated.

I have to be warm. I even have fingerless gloves for the winter if necessary. Oh and I track my stats fairly obsessively even if it’s not NaNo season. I record how much I write every day, and I separate it out per project (that’s what the daily documents are for). At the end of every days writing session I record the amount on the chart above my desk, and I add it to the months total on myWriteClub. At the end of the month I update my yearly total.

23) Most anticipated upcoming books?
Oh erm … *hides in box of shame* I have to be honest I don’t read books really. I know that’s terrible because I like to write books and so I should support other writers. I just don’t have any money and I don’t like going out, and I’m really picky about what I read. So I should probably go to the library and check books out, but I get much more enjoyment out of reading fanfic to be honest so I don’t have any incentive to bother. I could tell you about anticipated fanfic updates? Does that count? Probably not.

I really can’t wait for the next installment of RufeePeach’s Red Lights series. That series is just wow, I really identify with Gold and my jaw is usually on the floor every time I read because it’s so good. I’m eagerly anticipating the next chapter of All of Me by MarieQuiteContrarie. That fic is just perfection. I could go on and list a lot of writers but then I’m veering into dangerous territory because I don’t want to accidentally forget anyone, so I’ll leave it there.

41) Are there any books you feel have shaped you as a writer?
Hmm interesting question. My first complete stories were definitely heavily influenced by what I was reading at the time – Dale Brown and Tom Clancy. I know probably not what you expect an 11 year old girl to read. As I got older I lost a lot of the bad habits which plagued my earlier writing. So the heavy influence disappeared and so I don’t really have an answer for you. I can’t point to any specific book and say that it influenced my writing now. I’ve read answers to this question before and they usually say that a writers style inspired them, or that a particular book made them want to write. I’m afraid I don’t have any anecdotes like that.

Ask Me? Writing Questions

Fanfic ask meme – 14: Your favorite side pairings to put in? 18: How old were you when you started writing?

14) Your favorite side pairings to put in?
Swanfire is probably the one I work in most often. I ship them 🙂 Snow/Mary Margaret and David are probably a close second. Generally speaking though what side pairings are in a story, kinda depends on what characters are in the story. Given that my stories are Rumbelle-centric, the side characters are generally Bae/Neal, which easily brings in Emma and her family. So that’s kinda why it works out like that.

With some past fics I’ve done for gift exchanges, I had somebody want Ruby and Victor Whale as a pairing, so I did that. I don’t particularly ship it but I did like the convo they had together in season two. There was some common ground there. I really, really ship BraveWarrior. To be honest I want to write fic with them as the main pairing, and I always do a happy dance if I can work it in as a side pairing, or I read it as a side pairing in someone else’s fic.

So yeah basically Swanfire and BraveWarrior are my “other ships” for Once 🙂 However, if the story demands or people want, I’d probably write in almost any pairing for background characters.

18) How old were you when you started writing?
I’m not sure, how do you define writing? I think I started spinning stories almost as soon as I learnt to read, and I was 3 when I started reading. In terms of actual written down stories, it’s hard to remember. I definitely still have some scribbles I did from when I was 8-9, but I think I was probably 11 when I wrote my first complete story. So in the strictest terms I’ve been writing stories for over 15 years. If we’re more generous on what constitutes ‘writing’ then it’s probably closer to two decades. I feel old now.
