The War Within (Chapter Fourteen)

Synopsis: Alternate Season Six. Storybrooke is visibly under threat once more from Hyde and the Evil Queen. However, not all threats are visible as an old forgotten foe has been manipulating events from behind the scenes. The very nature of darkness is revealed as everyone struggles with the most difficult beast of all – acceptance.

Note: You are either going to love me or hate me for this chapter. There’s a lot of Rumbelle goodness but … well no spoilers 🙂 Anyway, chapter fifteen (the final chapter) will be on Tuesday as normal. Enjoy!

Warning: Spoiler alert but there’s basically what amount to zombies in this chapter. There’s no really disgusting descriptions because I personally don’t like that but the dead do walk Storybrooke.

The mirror room
shuddered again. This time Belle barely flinched, it seemed to happen with
alarming regularity and no harm had come to her, so she was trying not to be
scared by it. There was no way to know what it meant, it had happened far too
many times to be her body passing through a realm. Belle shivered, suddenly
feeling acutely vulnerable. Hades couldn’t steal her child under a sleeping
curse, but anything could happen to her body.

Belle sat up, from her
prone position on the floor, and stretched. A sad wry smile crossed her face,
she had to admit that wasn’t entirely true. So long as she was with
Rumplestiltskin, no harm would come to her, her husband would protect her. The
only problem she had was the means that he might use to achieve that protection.
She couldn’t condone the darkness.

Light bounced around
the room, in swirling patterns as another mirror came to life. Belle sighed and
twisted to look at it, wondering what piece of her past it would show her now.
It seemed to be choosing memories based on what she was thinking. However, she
had no idea what memory it would choose, to reflect her firm belief, that she
couldn’t condone the darkness.

What a great ending to the chapter, it would make a perfect episode cliffhanger. I liked the explanation of how the books and the grail came to be at the library; it didn’t make any sense that they’d been there all along. And Don Quixote came in handy! That was thinking ahead, if you knew you were going to have him sacrifice himself all along. Also, I just wish the show would fully utilise the sleeping curse as you’ve done, for Belle to reflect on her life and her choices up to this point. It’s very satisfying and I know we’re not going to get anything remotely like it in canon.

I did know that was going to happen to Don Quixote actually 🙂 I planned out the entire story before I wrote it, so I’ve always known exactly what was going to happen. To be fair to the show, it’s hard to show somebody ‘thinking’ on screen so they wouldn’t be able to do what I did. Maybe they’ll do something with the sleeping curse, I don’t know what but I’m glad you liked my take on it, thank you 🙂

I agree with you, it didn’t make sense that the grail and the books just ‘conveniently appeared’ unless somebody made them appear.

Anyway, thank you very much for all your really nice comments.

The next chapter will be posted on Tuesday. I hope you will enjoy it!

Note: This chapter is plot-centric but I will be posting chapter 14 on Friday which is full of Rumbelle goodness. I know I haven’t balanced the chapters very well. That’s because when I write my outline I don’t know how long the scenes will be, which sometimes makes the writing .. interesting 🙂 Anyway, enjoy!

~Flashback~
A little over one hundred years ago

“Father,
father!” John Darling screamed, running down the corridor.

His little
brother, Michael scrambled to keep up, his sock covered feet slipping on the
wood flooring. John collided heavily with the wooden door of his parents
bedroom. He banged loudly with the side of his hand, and shot Michael a
panic-stricken look. The door was flung open, their father framed by the light
of the lamp inside the room.

“What on earth
is the matter?” George Darling demanded.

“It’s Wendy
father, she went after Baelfire, the shadow took her,” John cried, his chest
heaving as he struggled not to cry.

That was so sad that the Darlings lost all their children. Not very smart of John, just waiting there in his nightshirt to be taken by the Shadow. He should have been sturdily dressed with pockets stuffed full of supplies. Pocketknife, compass, string, paper and pencil, you never know what might have come in useful. Zombies, ugh! Just when you think you’ve gotten rid of scum like Cora, her corpse comes back. Henry’s excitement at getting a sword was adorable.

Yeah it was quite idiotic of John but then he looked like he was maybe 6 on the show during the flashback part? Possibly 7 or 8 but even so he was very young and he didn’t think it through. He could see the happy ending and it was like it had already happened, the messy middle was just like /shrug I’ll figure it out.

Thanks for commenting. I’m glad you are enjoying it 🙂 I’m going to be posting the next chapter in a few minutes!

Note: Tomorrow I will be posting my fic for the OUaT Positivity gift exchange. I’m hoping that on Friday I’ll be able to post Chapter Three of Painting Layers of Love. I had to go out of town unexpectedly at the weekend, so it might not happen but I’m going to try. Anyway, enjoy chapter twelve!

That evening
found a large chunk of Storybrooke once more outside of city hall. The polls
had closed an hour earlier for the votes to be counted. Granny had marched
inside and peered down her glasses at everyone in there, pronouncing that there
would be no ‘funny business’ and she would be double checking the count.

Regina obviously hadn’t objected. Granny had
always been close with Snow and David, she frequently babysat for baby Neal.
However, Alexander had offered no objection either. Perhaps, Regina mused, that was because he thought
that he had Granny’s support. Granny had refused to publically state an
opinion, which she had to admit did seem tantamount to supporting the
opposition.

“It’ll be ok
mom,” Henry reassured her.

“I know,” Regina replied.

Truthfully it
wasn’t actually the election that was playing on her mind. She had spent a few
hours this afternoon, along with Emma and Henry, searching for Jekyll. They
hadn’t found him and nobody claimed to have seen him in a couple of days. In
fact they hadn’t found anyone who had seen Jekyll since Hyde’s disappearance.
It was an ominous coincidence.

Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!

BUT I LIKED ARTHUR IN THE UNDERWORLD! WHO GAVE YOU PERMISSION TO BRING HADES BACK?

Haha the kiss is … well spoiler alert but … *whistles*.

As for Hades nobody gave me permission but it made sense, Zelena has to remain relevant somehow if she isn’t on ‘Team Hero’ because villains can’t last forever or the heroes look inept. However, if you liked Arthur in the underworld … you might be interested in what happens in *checks outline* not Tuesday’s chapter, the chapter after that (chapter fourteen) most likely.

There’s three chapters left of the main story, though I have lots of oneshots I’m going to add to the verse showing different things and it’ll be open to prompts of course. Thanks for commenting – I loved the gif reactions! 🙂

TMI Tuesday, question for “War Within” Belle: On a scale of one to ten, how boring is a sleeping curse when you aren’t being tormented by the mirrors and regrets, and do you wish you brought a pack of cards?

image

I love books and reading. The library Rumple gave me at the dark castle had more books than I could read in a lifetime. I often wished that I could ‘stop time’ and have all the time in the world to read.

Even when the mirrors do go dark, my regrets are still there. I have no distraction from my thoughts so yes, a pack of cards would do nicely .. but I really would prefer a nice book.

I’m 2/3rds into chapter eleven of The War Within and I have a nagging feeling that I’m screwing this up. I’m trying to stick to canon and I’m justifying and backing up what I’m writing, using canon quotes and past scenes. However, I can’t escape the feeling that I’m making the characters act OOC.

I suppose fanfic is wish fulfillment and not canon. At the end of the day I am making the characters do/say things that we’re unlikely to see on screen. That’s the whole point of fanfic, I can make happen what I would like, not what we’re going to get.

I just hope it tracks and makes sense with the rest of the fic, that I haven’t done great leaps out of nowhere. I knew what I intended but that might not be what came across. This has been a difficult chapter. I guess I’ll find out on Tuesday what people think.

Note: This chapter is about 1,000 words longer than normal. I did think this fic would be about 50k once completed but yeah .. it’s going to be a little bit longer. My next fic update will definitely be Friday, I’m putting that in black and white so I have to do it, but it won’t be this, it’ll be Painting Layers of Love. Enjoy!

The land of
untold stories wasn’t completely without it’s charms. The ability to go into a
tavern, order a drink or three, and be able to drown his sorrows in peace was
rather nice. Nobody recognized him here. If they knew of the dark one it would
be his imp form, not the Mr. Gold look he’d now worn for over thirty years.

Back in
Storybrooke he had his liquor cabinet, which provided the alcohol. However,
there was something to be said for drinking anonymously in a crowd. He was
surrounded by people, yet completely alone. The low buzz of conversation
provided a small distraction from his maudlin thoughts, anything to keep from
dwelling on the situation he was in.

Rumplestiltskin
recognized the name of this establishment, the Benbow Inn, it was from Treasure Island. That was a story he had played no part
in. From what he remembered from his cursed memories, there was nothing within
that story that would help him either. For all that he was here to forget, he
was also on the lookout for anything or anyone that could help.

He needed to
find something he could use, or see something that would spark an idea. He
really couldn’t bear to fail another child.

Very heartwarming scene where Jim was happy to see Silver, and Rumpel realising that it was his own disbelief in himself that has screwed up his life before.  I like that Regina has recognised that it was perhaps the wrong thing, an unnecessary thing, to split the ‘evil queen’ part of herself off into a separate persona.

Thank you so much! Yup Rumple’s revelation is very important and yeah Regina has begun to realize something about the split. I don’t want to say too much (no spoilers) but it leads into the Evil Queen’s motivation and will tie heavily into the big dramatic finale scene I have planned.

This fic will be done by the season six premiere so we’re getting closer to the end, everything is going to start tying together, it should be good hopefully 🙂

Note: I know it’s Monday, not Tuesday. However, I thought having the chapter early would be better than having it late. I have to unexpectedly go out of town again, it’s a family thing, and so I won’t be around tomorrow. That also means I’ll miss TMI Tuesday. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask, there just won’t be a reply until Wednesday. Enjoy!

“What the
hell?”

The young man
cradled his stinging hand against his chest. He had just reached for the door
handle on Gold’s shop and the damn thing had zapped him. He’d seen actual blue
sparks. Gingerly he reached forward again, this time slowly and he felt the
magical buildup. He couldn’t get his hand within three inches of the door
handle without the protections kicking in.

“Will you hurry
up?” his companion hissed, looking up and down the street.

“Doors locked –
magically,” he growled.

He stepped away
from the door, and they both walked a few feet to the nearby alley. There
weren’t many people about, and the few that were walking along weren’t paying
them any attention. However, if they loitered in front of the door for too
long, then they would be noticed and they couldn’t afford that – not now.

“Since when?”
the other man said incredulously.

Although I’m not interested in keeping either Jekyll or Hyde around, I felt sorry for Jekyll that he was offed by the Evil Queen right after he bravely pulled Hyde back into himself. And you would think Belle would learn by now – she thinks going away by herself to think things through when they hit a snag in their relationship ‘always worked’, but if it did, they’d have a much more solid relationship. You can’t work on a relationship apart, they have to work things out together.  (Also, hey, nice job tying up the loose end of what ever happened to Albert!)

Heh thanks! 🙂

Yeah I felt sorry for Jekyll. He did the brave thing, he made things right and then death was his reward. However, it had to happen because of .. reasons, the Evil Queen and .. something else.

Yup poor forgotten Albert Spencer/King George. You know I wonder why they never brought him back. a) there was never the right storyline to do it, b) never even thought about it, c) actor was too busy/refused, d) some other reason. Given how he could have been a political antagonist for Storybrooke leadership, and his importance to David, there was a lot there for them to play with and yet it was just dropped completely.

As for Belle, yeah I agree with you. A good relationship in my opinion is built on communication, not time apart. In fact I think in Belle’s next scene she is going to have a bit of a revelation on exactly what the ‘time apart’ has done for them … that won’t be in the next chapter though but soon 🙂

Note: Here’s the promised Friday chapter! I feel I should apologize for the length of Morgan’s quest, I got rather carried away. However, unlike the show, if I spend time on a guest star it doesn’t take away screentime from the main characters – it’ll just make the fic longer. For fans of Stargate SG1, you might recognize the test of bravery and self-sacrifice, it was the Asgard test for the Cimmerians in 2×06 Thor’s Chariot. Enjoy!

~Flashback~
Ten Years Ago (outside the dark curse)

“Are you sure about this?” Allison asked.

Morgan squeezed her hand reassuringly, as he warily eyed the cave entrance. He nodded firmly.
“Yes, it has to be done.”

After he had found the map, with the location marked with an X, in Merlin’s tower, Morgan had gone home. He had found his wife and told her a version of the truth, that
he had to go on a quest and that he didn’t know when he would return. However, Allison had surprised him, and not just because she had found the map and
confronted him with it.

The ‘not Zeus’ headcanon accepted! *Bangs gavel down*

Heh thanks!

The show actually contradicted themselves with Zeus, which is what gave me the idea. They showed the pages of the book, of Hades story on screen, and some lovely soul transcribed them for the show wiki. Zeus is described as a bear of a man, with muscles like tree trunks. That is not the Zeus we saw on screen, who looked practically like a teenager.

Hence it wasn’t Zeus. Hook didn’t ask any questions, just made assumptions and no-one else saw him. Made sense to me. Thanks for commenting! 🙂

I have a slight issue with The War Within. I was writing some of the next chapter last night and I have a pov crisis. The scene would be so much more powerful and relevant from Snow’s pov. However, I just can’t do it, I can’t get into her headspace.

When I continue writing tonight, I’ll try again. If I can’t manage it, then I will have to try and show her feelings through the dialogue and Regina’s observations. That won’t be as good but needs must.

Maybe you can watch some Snow scenes on YouTube. That might help you get into her head.

Hmm that’s a good idea actually. I was rewatching the show. I got to about episode 6 of season 2 and then neflix added all the Star Trek shows and I got a bit distracted. Plus with the amount of writing I’ve been doing lately, I’ve barely watched any TV at all.

Yeah, I’ll go find myself some Snow fanvids or something. Thanks! 🙂
