For your Rushbelle fic. What is Belle’s backstory for that? We didn’t see much of her reaction to Rush’s confession at the end about his wife. Is she moving on from a similar trauma with Gold? Or did she turn to academia/research to escape her father’s matchmaking with Gaston? How did she become involved with the Stargate program and wind up on Destiny? What is her specialism on Destiny? Most importantly is there going to be more and a happy ending?

sarashouldbestudying:

(Thank you because you always send me asks and generally talk a lot to me about SGU/my fics)

Well, my idea is that Belle just never met Gold. She’s just like any other AU Belle, but instead of a grumpy pawnbroker she found an even grumpier scientist. I do write angst, but I just couldn’t bring myself to write about Belle falling in love with Rush after losing Rumple. Especially since they not only look alike, but they’re also alike in personality. It would have felt strange >.<

Belle is an archaeologist, but what she does for the Stargate Program is something unique, because it’s obviously not something that is taught in college. She studies the Gates and the Ancients, trying to understand what was the gates’ function and meaning beside the obvious “really fast travel” option. Pretty much like we keep wondering what Stonehenge was for, just on a much bigger level. She also knows the Ancient language perfectly, and is trying to analyze it to see if there were any changes in it throughout time.

She ended up on the Stargate program because she was one of the best in her field, and because she really has no sense of self preservation. A dangerous, secret work that would give her access to incredible knowledge and give her a chance to escape her over protective and slightly-suffocating father? She accepted the work without a second thought.

Beside the slight inconvenience of being stranded on a spaceship on the other side of the universe, Belle secretly enjoys Destiny much more than she’d like to admit to anyone, except Rush. They share this enthusiasm for Destiny because yes, we might die at every moment but we’re doing it FOR SCIENCE.

Belle and Rush knew each other barely more than by name before Destiny, but Belle was already curious about the grumpy scientist. During the very first days on board they argued because Belle kept trying to explore the ship and Rush was trying to keep her from doing any damage. Once he actually got some sleep and started getting used to the lack of caffeine and nicotine, things got better. She still spends most of her time exploring the ship, both to localize damages or stuff they can use and to see if she can learn anything more about the Ancients as a society.

Will there be more of this fic? Idk. I do have lots of ideas for S1, but I’m not sure about S2, because Belle’s presence would change a lot of things. Anyway I can’t imagine writing it before RCIJ ends, because I have to finish that first.

I hope I answered everything 🙂

My pleasure 🙂 I like to support writers when I see TMI Tuesday pop up on my dash. I always think it’s sad if someone doesn’t get any asks. I struggle sometimes thinking of questions to ask but I do my best. As for SGU, I love the entire Stargate franchise, I could talk all day about it. Nicholas Rush is my favourite from SGU so yeah – Team Rush! 🙂

I don’t know if you have seen SG1 or Atlantis but they did say in Atlantis, the hologram in the first two-parter episode ‘Rising’ in season one, why they built Stargates in Pegasus. To allow the second evolution to journey among the stars and foster understanding and trade for those that weren’t developed enough to travel through space on their own.

When I hear that explanation and then I think about the space gates I just laugh. The second evolution would have been on foot and their technology didn’t include MALP’s so the first they would have known of a space gate is stepping through and dying. Do that a couple of times and that gate address would have been blacklisted among that planet but they wouldn’t know what was so deadly about it.

Obviously the second evolution wasn’t why they built the Stargates initially because that came millions of years after the gates were first produced. That is actually what is so damn fascinating about the Stargate franchise. It has this tremendous backstory to it. One of the Alteran’s had the idea for the Stargate when they left their home galaxy to avoid civil war with the majority of their brethren (who would become the Ori) and one of the first gates they built was the Earth gate which we found in Antarctica.

We don’t know how long it took them to build the gate, or how they developed one gate into a network of gates. To be fair I think the Alteran’s (or Ancients as they become known) were very much – FOR SCIENCE – in terms of their reasoning. Although unfortunately that did seem to have a detrimental effect on their common sense.

We also don’t know much about Ancient culture. We tend to think of them as scientists because we know them for their technology. However, my headcanon is that their society was as diverse as ours is and only a small fraction of their population were scientists. Otherwise how could their civilization have been as vast as it was? They needed people to build things, to produce food, clothing etc. There is some evidence for this because the SGC met some Ancients on Atlantis through stasis/time delay/time travel weirdness and they had regular soldiers etc.

Belle’s job would be mega important and I bet Daniel Jackson loved her! Maybe he’s the one that recruited her? I can just imagine Belle being frustrated with him though because Daniel ascended twice and remembers nothing from that time.

Erm yeah I think I’ve gone on a bit /hides

WHAT THE F*CK DO YOU MEAN “AMANDA PERRY IS DEAD?” I REFUSE TO ACCEPT THIS F*CKING BULLS*IT AS CANON.

sarashouldbestudying:

Nope.

Nope.

Nope.

Nein.

No.

Fanculo.

Keep watching. It’s not the end and in fact if the show had continued this could have worked out even better for them. Full disclosure I never shipped them. However, I can still think of multiple ways they could get their happy ending.

I won’t tell you my theories now because that will spoil twists for upcoming episodes. When you have gone past that point, you’ll either know what I’m hinting towards or I’ll tell you 🙂

2×06

sarashouldbestudying:

That was one really good episode.

Man you are powering through these! I don’t blame you though, I think I did the same. Once there were enemies to fight the show picked up a bit. The survival struggle was interesting but there’s nothing like a good enemy.

I miss Stargate. 354 episodes in 17 seasons, and 2 TV movies was just not enough. The rebooted movies are going to ignore all of the TV canon and just use the 1994 movie as source material.

I want to know what happened after the end of SGU. I want to know what happened to Atlantis, I know there’s the book series but it’s not the same. I want to know what happened when the secret finally broke and they revealed the Stargate to the world. They weren’t done, there was more to explore, there was still so much potential.

Sometimes I like to daydream. Star Trek is getting a new TV series next year. In an alternate universe where pigs fly etc. maybe Stargate could get a new TV show too.

Anyway, you have so much coming up in the rest of the season! I can’t wait to read your reactions 🙂

Just saw 1×16

OMG NICK AND MANDY, MY PRECIOUS SCIENCE BABIES! The way they look at each other kills me.
But no matter what show Carlyle is in, he keeps getting cockblocked. It’s a curse XD.

Best scene ever: Mandy thinking that Eli finds it strage for a disabled person to fall in love, while what he’s actually saying is: “Rush? Are you sure? Girl, you can do better than him”.

Btw, am I the only one who thinks that’s really creepy that thanks to the communication stones people can kiss/have sex with their loved ones using someone else’s body?

Oh, and I definitely think that it’s dumb to work out and go jogging when you’re stuck on the ship with the very real possibility that you could be starving soon.

The stones creep me out full stop.

I bet if they ever ran into an ancient scientist and told them about the stones, the ancient would fall over in shock.

“They worked for you!?! That’s fascinating but they are not supposed to work like that!!”

Because some ancients had telepathy so I headcanon that the stones were supposed to be like cerebro in enhancing that telepathy, which meant they could place really long distance mind calls. So suddenly you would have someone talking to you in your head. Do talking was all they could do, not so different from a cellphone, loads less creepy than swapping bodies.

Yeah the body swap thing is just ick because I don’t care whether people give permission for you to use their body, it’s still wrong.

Yeah Eli being like that about Rush annoys he. I have never understood why Eli is such a Young fanboy. He should have been on Rush’s side but never has been. Besides Eli, there is no one better than Rush, Amanda has excellent taste.

OMG I’m a genius

sarashouldbestudying:

I talked of a possible pregnancy on Destiny, and here it comes!

Btw, I definitely wouldn’t have stayed on the planet. Like, nope.

I’m not sure TJ’s counts because it happened pre-Destiny. I agree with you that there should have been consequences for others e.g. Park! Heh

I wanted to reply to your post about 1×12 Divided but haven’t been on the PC. Good thing too maybe as I might have gone on a bit. Divided made me so mad. People shouldn’t treat other people like that.

It wasn’t what happened to Rush that was the real issue. It was a ship full of scared people who just wanted to know they were being listened to and got desperate enough to take drastic measures. Rather than listen the military burst in, James smashes someone in the face even. It all could have been avoided.

Set up something like Atlantis. A leadership council for day to day and a military commander for emergencies. That worked well in Pegasus, why not on Destiny?

sarashouldbestudying:

Oh yes, Young, abandoning your best scientist on a desert planet just because you don’t like him is definitely the way you’re gonna get everybody home.

You watched Justice!!!

I had such a reaction when I watched this, literally screaming. Why? Because “we don’t leave people behind” that has been stargate command’s belief and practice since it started. I’m not sure whether it was O’Neill or Hammond that inspired it but it became protocol. It’s seen time and time again in SG1, in Atlantis, it’s what makes the SGC what it is.

I think Carter said it best in Heroes. “

You can’t ask airmen, soldiers, human beings to risk their lives without backup, without knowing that we would be there for them.” – they bring them home.

I mean this was supposed to be the core of SGU – or so I thought – the struggle and the journey to get home. I know Rush said later “It was never about getting home” but for most people on that ship I think it was.

Young going against that, Young not just leaving someone behind because he had to do it, but to leave them behind to die on purpose. That just went against everything that Stargate Command was supposed to stand for and Young is supposed to be held up as this ‘hero’, the representative of the SGC on Destiny and nope, just nope. I hope that if O’Neill ever found out that he would come down on Young like a ton of bricks. O’Neill never left anyone behind, even people he didn’t like, he risked himself because that is what you do – you don’t leave people behind.

It wasn’t because it was Rush that I was so mad, Young could have done it to anyone and I would have been appalled. The fact that it was Rush made it 10x worse because Rush knew more about Destiny than anyone. Leaving him behind meant that the next time the ship breaks – who’s going to fix it? Leaving him behind meant that if there are hostile aliens (and the crashed ship suggested aliens) Rush would be a prime source of information and the worst security leak possible.

Young just left him there. He had no supplies, no weapon and no way to dial the gate. It would have been kinder to have shot him because at least then he wouldn’t die slowly and painfully of exposure or dehydration.

I suppose the writers of SGU did a damn good job with this episode. I was so furious it immediately addicted me to the show. Before that I had been watching because it was Stargate and I thought I should, but I could only manage by employing a hefty supply of sarcasm and stupid comments (basically making fun of it). After Justice no more humor, the characters had finally got under my skin. I was so mad I went and wrote a 5k blogpost because it inspired me that much.

Anyway sorry I’ve gone on a bit. I always react strongly to the Justice episode. I also react pretty damn strong to Space and Divided (the next two) because they just follow on and yikes I could go on a lot about those and Young’s appalling leadership.

I hope you enjoy them!

All-Stargate Dream Team

There’s this cool twitter account called Stargate Command over on – well twitter and they just asked “What’s your all-stargate dream team?” Now my twitter is set to private and 140 characters is so not enough, so I will just answer that question for my own fun right here.

To be honest so far as teams go how do you beat original SG1? It kinda can’t be done so I’m going to build a team that doesn’t include any of the original SG1 because otherwise I would just want all of them.

Warning ramble under the cut.

That still leaves oh so many options. There’s Jonas, Cameron Mitchell or Vala who were actually SG1 team members. Then there’s other Stargate personnel such as Janet Fraiser, the four Lt. from Proving Ground: Elliot, Hailey, Satterfield and Grogan. There’s key people like Bra’tac, Selmak/Jacob or Martouf/Lantash. Rya’c, son of Teal’c, another one, or that Jaffa with the burned off symbol, any rebel Jaffa really. There were lots of cool Tok’ra over the years too.

There’s the SGA-1 team: Sheppard, McKay, Teyla, Ronan, Ford. Also from Atlantis there’s Major Lorne, Zelenka, Carson Beckett, Jennifer Keller, Lt. Cadman etc.

From Universe there’s Rush obviously, Scott, Greer, James, Varro, TJ, Young if I absolutely have to list him, Mr Brody etc.

How do you pick just one team?

I did sometimes wonder who would be the new SG1 when they said .. somewhere that Cameron got promoted to command the Odyssey. Teal’c and Daniel didn’t seem to be on active SG1 duty when they did guest spots in season 5 Atlantis and on Universe.

The fate of Atlantis when it crashlanded on Earth in the series finale is kinda unknown. I read one place that it got turned into a moonbase, I read somewhere else that it went back to Pegasus. From McKay’s guest spot on Universe I’m just going to say either Atlantis isn’t a factor, or the Milky Way is quiet enough that SG1 could be deployed to Pegasus.

New SG1 post series
Team Leader: Colonel John Sheppard
Science Officer: Captain Jennifer Hailey
Shooter: Ronan
Culture: Vala (doesn’t know it like Daniel, but knows the galaxy really well)

Another version could be:
Team Leader: Major Lorne (would likely need a promotion first)
Science Officer: Captain Hailey (yeah – again, but she is a good fit)
Shooter:

Rya’c (son of Teal’c)
Culture: A living Tok’ra (I’m sure there has to be one)

I’m splitting it down the roles the original SG1 had. If I ignored a certain element like for instance the culture requirement, then it could get a bit more fluid. Also, those ones were for post-series and so dead people weren’t eligible. Plus, the people on Destiny aren’t eligible on account of being on the other side of the Universe.

Say all-time, open to everyone, dead, other side of the universe or otherwise and forget roles, it’s just 4-5 people who would kick-butt out there. I’m actually having trouble with this because I just want to list all the scientists. However, there is no point in putting Rush, Zelenka and Hailey on the same SG team. Even if it is the scientists that save the day a lot.

All-time
– Dr Nicholas Rush (come on you knew that was coming)
– Selmak/Jacob
– Vala
– Ronan
(it occurs to me there are no military officers in this list, Jacob was a two star General but when he blended with Selmak he kinda wasn’t in the chain of command any longer)

Meh lack of military officers aside, that is my dream team of four. It could only be improved by adding Bra’tac and then yup the universe is going to be a safe place for sure.

SGU 1×07

sarashouldbestudying:

OMG Rush, you little manipulative shit, I love you so much <3

“A little bit of theater, always nice.”

That scene is one of my favorites, it’s just pure Rush. You are making me want to restart my SGU rewatch!

I got to Faith and stopped because Young makes me so mad, I can only watch when the house is empty in case I scream at the TV. Oh man, first time I watched Justice – yikes! You still have that to look forward to, in two episodes time.

You just prepare yourself 🙂

sarashouldbestudying:

So, do you think Rush knew that the Destiny wasn’t going to burst?

My headcanon is that he didn’t realize it straight away because he was in nicotine and caffeine withdrawal, he hadn’t slept in days, everyone blamed him for their situation and he felt under incredible stress.

He collapsed, slept for twelve hours, woke up and realized that he had missed the obvious. Destiny predated Atlantis. Atlantis had all the new shiny tech. 3 ZPM’s powered Atlantis’s shield for 10,000 years before being depleted. Destiny had been flying around on auto pilot for a hell of a lot longer than that. It was impossible for it to have done so off the equivalent of a single tank of gas.

He didn’t tell Young because he knew it wouldn’t make a difference. Young would ask Rush if he could prove it and there was no proof, and no way to get proof with all the consoles being dead due to lack of power. Young would still have had to do everything he did just in case.

He could have told Young and then been able to say “I told you so” when he was proved right. If he had told the rest of the crew, then maybe that would have been the start of them trusting him. I have never been quite sure in my headcanon why he didn’t go down that route. Was it because he felt that he deserved their hatred and mistrust? Was it because he wanted revenge? Was it for another reason I can’t think of right now?

I don’t know. Either way I’m pretty damn sure that Rush knew it was going to be fine by the time he took his name off the shuttle.

So, do you think Rush knew that the Destiny wasn’t going to burst?

IMO, the answer is clearly stated in how the scene with Eli and Chloe on the observation deck was acted (and a lot of other scenes in that episode too). Rush was so surprised that they still lived. And Rush is a bad actor (but RC is a great one), so if he lied about it, the whole scene would be completely different.

And even if he read A. C. Clarke’s Rendezvous with Rama and remembered the story, this outcome was not what he’d expected, and how could he?

To understand this question you only need to watch Rush carefully (and forget Rumple, they’re not the same).

His reaction to Young is from my POV very understandable. I’d be pissed like hell if someone would treat me as if I become his new pet, after something like that.

I initially thought that he didn’t know it, but then I started to doubt…

But I’d really like to think that he didn’t know.

To be honest I have gone back and forth on it a lot before I arrived at my headcanon. Watching the episode I do kinda agree with you that he didn’t know. The last scene in the mess hall, I think he’s sort of trying to imply that he did know because he wants Young to think he’s that smart. Either that or you are right again that he is just mad at Young. Was this when he said “rewarded at your whim”? Because that was a very good point. It was an unfair leadership thing and not a good sign for moving forward but then Young was an awful leader.

This is when I then run into trouble because Rush should have been that smart. In fact he didn’t even have to be that smart to work it out, it was a simple matter of logic. I loathe when characters are made dumb so the plot can work. Rush is my favorite, therefore it’s easier for me to headcanon that he secretly knew, than accept that the writers made everyone be dumb for the “forced jeopardy” of the episode.

Anyway, @sarashouldbestudying I’m sorry for jumping all over your posts about SGU. I’m a big Stargate fan and it’s hard to restrain myself. I’ll try not to be too scarily overenthusiastic heh. It’s just so cool to be able to discuss this show for a change.
