This flash fiction isn’t being very flash. I mean it’s supposed to be what max 500 words? Someone please tell my brain that starting on a scene that is at least a couple of scenes ahead of the prompted one … well it’s not flash fiction is it?

/facepalm

On the plus side I think I might have written a tiny bit of what could be called banter *gasp* I know right? I wonder if I can bottle that so I might be able to do it again sometime. Banter is hard.

Watching CSI and man Catherine is always having to protect Grissom from himself isn’t she? The example in this episode:

“You’re not going in there without backup!”

Grissoms all “We can go back or we can go forward” (he’s going in)

So Catherine pulls her gun and follows him because Grissom sure as hell never has his.

(Full disclosure Catherine probably is my favourite character).

Have you ever looked at your all your OTPs from all your fandoms, and tried to figure out what they have in common? Do you have a type, when it comes to OTPs? Do you see a couple interact for five seconds and immediately think, oh yeah I’m gonna ship them hard? Or does it take a while for a couple to grow on you? Are your OTPs wildly different from each other, and you have to scratch your head and wonder, how can I ship them, but also them? WTH?

Shipping is weird.

galactic-pirates

Sometimes it takes a while because obviously the more we see of characters, the more we know about them – sometimes it even takes a rewatch and the perspective of later knowledge.

Other times it’s like a lightening bolt and immediate.

So how I get there can be varied but in terms of the ships … thinking how to phrase this um, everyone is different right, so why people like ships/characters are different. However, I reckon that if anyone looked deep down at their ships/favourite characters, there would be common factors.

For me my favourite characters are either scientists or just really smart – intelligence is obviously something I like. All my OTP’s are clever people.

With some of my OTP’s there are obvious power dynamics, and others not so much, but ALL OF THEM are equals in the relationship. I only ship mutual respect, that is absolutely key and unfortunately not something I see a lot. I’ve seen dozens of shows and I only have a handful of OTP’s.

I guess what I’m trying to say is traits like intelligence or mutual respect are more like concepts and therefore apply to all the many and varied different situations. Those are just two examples of course, and they are specific to me, but I reckon that if people looked they might find some equally broad criteria which all of their OTP’s fit into. I could be wrong obviously but I do think that there is a trigger for us, for why we like what we like, and we might not realise what that trigger is but it’s always there.

I’m thinking In Your Arms is not the best verse in the world to play “lets get back on the horse” with. Equally Painting Layers of Love as they both have far too much of me in them.

I want something lighter to write. To that end.

PLEASE PROMPT ME STUFF

See the above bingo card.

Pick a square and add some kind of prompt to it: a word, a phrase, a quote, several words – be a cat, if it fits in the askbox you can have it.

I have a ton and a half of prompt lists if that helps.

Finally specify your show and/or pairing:
– Once Upon a Time (Rumbelle, Swanfire, BraveWarrior)
– Agents of Shield (Fitzsimmons, Philinda)
– Warehouse 13 (Bering and Wells)
– The Librarians (Eve and Flynn)
– Castle (Haylexis)
or you know, it could be character-based and not shippy in which case the field is wide open. Go for the above shows or Killjoys, Dark Matter, Stargate, Leverage, that kind of thing.

I’m sure that if I do get any prompts, they’ll be Rumbelle as that’s where my friends are (love you guys!) but I’m just saying you can have other stuff too. I’m going to shut up now.

Please, if you are bored, blow up my askbox as I want to play with tropes and do some flash fiction and feel good about writing again. Thanks! 🙂

#look I made a bingo card#that’s not even all the tropes as the list was a lot longer#this is probably not how a bingo card works but I’ve not done it before I’m making it up as I go along

I just wrote this in my planning doc

I don’t care that’s diabetic sweet, gimme the fluff.

I’m not sure what I’m commenting on here, my planning style? the fact that the end of this fic is going to be sickly sweet fluff?

(whispers: you have to write it first)

SHHHH!

Honestly I started planning this intending to write it for *cough* August’s *cough* AMR, still have nothing more than a plan /facepalm

9. What are the best things about your current fandom?
That I understand it? Seriously fandoms are kinda an elusive beast to me. I don’t know how to find fellow fans – what tags do they use? what event blogs are there? I want to join in dammit and I don’t know how! But I don’t know entirely how I worked it out but I’m here in Rumbelle land and it’s comfortable. I still don’t know everyone that I should and 99% of the time drama passes me by (my nickname is Captain Oblivious), so obviously I’m still kinda on the periphery somehow.

All I want from fandom is to be able to flail and chat to people who love it as much as I do. So what is best about the Rumbelle fandom is that I have made friends whom I can talk to about my passions 🙂

34. What’s the word count on your longest fic?
Longest individual fic is The War Within at 71,905. Longest verse (multiple fics, same universe) is also War Within standing at 115,721.

47. Archive Of Our Own, Fanfiction.net or Tumblr – where do you prefer to post and why?
I’m old. I remember the days of posting in private archives/forums. Does anyone else remember proboards forums? I still technically have an account at ff.net but I haven’t posted there in years, not since before I quit fandom the first time over a decade ago. You know that tumblr post that goes around which says what internet generation are you? I’m the “I was there Gandalf!” hehe 🙂

I got to say AO3. It’s neater because it’s designed for fic posting, whereas tumblr’s more all about the reblogs and the conversation. It’s also much easier to upload than ff.net, unless ff.net has had an overhaul in the last 10 years? Anyway I find it easier to post and I just like the general look. So yeah AO3!

I’m watching Ocean’s 8 again. Such a good movie. I seriously want a sequel. The men got three movies – WE NEED THREE MOVIES TOO!

Like come on they don’t just do it for the money. Daphne said she joined for the company – better than a book club – Debbie is a lifelong con and she and Lou are totally married.

I need this like air.

Yesterday was a bad day

I wrote a couple of “I don’t know what to do” posts because I’m not being productive how I would like.

Then it got worse.

You know how sometimes it’s not what happens, so much as what it triggers? Well what happened yesterday shouldn’t have been that big a deal but it felt like the final nail in the coffin. I have been feeling very hopeless and despairing and what happened felt like validation of those feelings. I haven’t got even close to halfway with NaNo, I’m writing less in a year than I used to do in a month – I feel like I’m losing myself.

28, 35, and 38 for the writing meme

*hugs you* thank you my friend!

28) Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much.
Oh my word, I’m going to deliberately misconstrue this. I know it says fic writers but I feel like ‘oh the drama’ if I pick people I know, does that make sense? We all write fic for fun and so you are all wonderful.

So I’m going to go authors.

#1 – Lee Goldberg – He wrote the Diagnosis Murder series and hands-down I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed a set of books more. He captured the characters on-screen and brought them to life in book-form which is incredibly difficult. I mean we all have our own impressions of characters right? I tried reading the Once novelisation of the pilot and I couldn’t get past the first chapter as the characters were just all wrong. Well he took the characters I knew and loved and made a book series and it was all spot-on. Not just the characters either but the off-beat comedy of the show – he captured it all.

#2 – Anthony Horowitz – That man’s career inspires me. He has written books, he’s worked on TV shows, and he’s really down-to-earth. I had the opportunity to hear him speak and I actually asked a question! I said “how much of your first draft makes it to final form” and he said “about 10%” and I don’t know, hearing that a published, successful author struggles like we do gave me heart and he was so nice about it. Plus I’ve enjoyed a good chunk of his work.

#3 – John Rogers – He’s a scriptwriter, he’s written for Leverage and The Librarians and he is a treasure. He treats fans with such respect. I remember a couple of twitter posts. In one a fan asked what the characters apartments were like and he made a joke and said “they sleep in bunkbeds” and then followed it up with “just kidding- unless you need it for your fic, and then they do :)” and then when the show was cancelled he said “it’s your universe now – go play!” Plus those shows bring me such comfort and joy and while it’s not just the writing that brings them to life, obviously that is a big part of it.

35) Would you ever kill off a canon character?
Yup and I have done but only minor ones. I would never write character-death fic for any character I like/feel attached to, put it that way.

38) Talk about a review that made your day.
The most recent one was this:

This is so wonderful! I hadn’t read it for ages, but felt I had to again!

It was on Full Circle and I cried, and I still haven’t responded because I don’t want to frighten them. It’s just that – they loved it BUT they loved it so much they read it more than once! More. Than. Once. Somebody thought my work was worth their time – more than once! I mean it’s a wonderful feeling that somebody thinks my work is worth their time at all – but more than once! That is like the ultimate compliment.
