Ok so total fail on the Fanfic Friday thing. I had a really bad mental health week and just yeah, nothing happened. So reset the clock and try again next week! Tomorrow is another day and all that jazz.

What’s the fanfic Friday thing?

I figured I needed a deadline.

Back when I first started posting fanfic, my first WIP The War Within, I posted pretty much without fail every Tuesday. I remember making myself sit and write because I couldn’t miss posting day. I want to recapture that and therefore decided on Fanfic Friday, the day where I post something – anything (for the moment at least).

Like I said I only decided to do it on Wednesday so I’m trying to cut myself a break (rather than decide I’ve failed already) and declare that next week is Week One, giving myself a little more time.

Soooo that Fanfic Friday thing … because I decided to do that on Wednesday this week doesn’t count right? *cringes*

#one day maybe I’ll master this doing things thing#today is kinda that day as I have hoovered the whole house but that doesn’t help in the writing completion stakes /sigh

I finally got my hands on Avengers: Infinity War today – finally!! *mutters* stupid month long extra wait*

BUT

I feel kinda blah sucky (probably because I procrastinated all day *sigh*) and so I’m going to watch Leverage instead, or maybe The Librarians, I love that show.

So far today I’ve done nothing I intended to do. I procrastinated for a long time searching for the perfect app to stop procrastination *side eyes self*

You know what while I’m in a bitching mood, let me talk iPhones.

Don’t get me wrong I love the thing and use it all the time. It is literally my lifeline but yesterday was the announcement and just ugh, I have to vent a little.

Moany McMoan under the cut. I realised when I got to the end that I think I sound like a “get off my lawn” kinda person. Ooops.

Generally speaking I’m a fan. I didn’t use to be. I thought Apple was overpriced, paying for the name, not worth it etc. and so my first two ‘digital music players’ were a different brand. I think they each lasted maybe a year before the headphone jack gave up the ghost. The iPod classic I got next lasted 11 years of constant use and still works fine. Last November I technically replaced it but I still use it in the house, I just don’t carry it around anymore. I’d say that was much better value.

I have a similar story with the iPhones. I had a 3S, then a 4S and then a 5S. The 3S did four years, the 4S did six I think? and the 5S is still going. Could an android do that? Well possibly but back when I first got the 3S I don’t remember there being the kinda competition there is now and it is true once you get comfortable with a make it’s hard to move.

My mum’s husband has an Android (Samsung) and he’s the only one in the family that does. All my cousins, aunt, uncle, everyone, has iPhones. He’s a bit technically-challenged so he’s always handing it to me to fix. So I can confirm that model anyway is heavy and big and the interface is confusing (alright unfamiliar) and he also pays about twice as much as I do per month. Obviously one example does not a sample size make, and I should do research.

Still I’m kinda tied in with Apple and not just because of iTunes. I got an Apple Watch for christmas and I am in love with that thing. It stops me from getting stiff by sitting for too long. I don’t burn my dinner anymore as I can set timers. I can change the track of my music when my phone is in my bag (and I don’t have to hold the heavy phone!), I can see my appointments at a glance, I can pay for stuff without carrying around money. Once upon a time I thought the Apple watch was the most stupid and pointless (and overpriced!) bit of tech in the world but it has slipped so seamlessly into my life and helped so much.

Hang on? I said I was going to be bitching. Well … yeah. Last November I combined music + phone with the iPhone 8. I got it through the upgrade program as that was the most hassle-free/best deal around.

The problem is – it’s heavy, or at least noticeably heavier than my old iPhone 5S. Yesterday Apple announced the new phone lineup and yikes! They are ALL bigger and heavier than the 8 I have at the moment 🙁

Erm why? They are phones, not tablets! I want to be able to put it in my pocket and *cough* I do kinda play phone games and I don’t need to be weightlifting at the same time. Alright I know that’s an exaggeration but try holding it for an extended time.

Also – the price! I rather naively thought when I signed up for the upgrade program that those were the tiers. That the price I was agreeing to pay, would be the same when I upgraded. I went for the 8 rather than the X, so I was on the slightly older phone. I figured when it came to upgrade time there would be a new phone (the 11 or whatever they called it) and so the X would be the older one and therefore discounted to 8 level prices.

Yeah … no. The X has gone the same way as the Apple Watch Series 2 did – vanished. The replacement (kinda) is the XR, with the XS being the new model and the XS Max being as crazy as the Plus versions I never understood (it’s a phone, not a tablet!).

The XR is the heaviest, it’s larger than the XS, and the 128GB version is £4 more a month than the 256GB 8 I currently have. It’s also different (worse?) in some ways than the X, and obviously not as good as the XS as the XR is the ‘budget’ model (which is a laughable word on its own). I also can’t get the XR in Gold, although I guess the blue looks ok. To be honest I don’t even know why I’m bothered as the case hides the colour anyway.

There’s no way I can afford the XS so that’s a non-starter. 128GB is enough space (I’m currently using 85GB) but the XS doesn’t have a 128 model, it’s 64 or 256 and the 256 is a whopping £24 more a month *jaw drops* ???? So yeah it’s the XR or nothing.

I’m currently considering what is best to do. I haven’t been as kind to the battery on the 8 as I have been to my previous phones as I assumed it only had to last 11 months. However, I won’t have lost anything money-wise if I refuse to upgrade as the 20 month contract is still cheaper than I could have got the phone anywhere else, it’s just not as good a deal as upgrading at 11 months would have been.

The problem I guess is that I have no idea what 2019 will bring. If the trend continues with bigger + heavier then my hand will be forced at some point anyway. I have 6 weeks to decide as I can’t upgrade until 25/10 and the XR isn’t released until the next day. Plus there will probably be a waiting list and I have never been an early adopter. I do prefer to let other people find all the bugs first. So I could wait until January. The price isn’t going to change but if I do go for it hopefully it would be a smoother process.

I just wish they would release a phone which a) was lighter, b) was smaller (it’s a phone dammit!) and c) prioritised battery life. I couldn’t care less about cameras and my eyes probably aren’t good enough to appreciate the better screens. I just want it to load maps, webpages, social media, email, the calendar, a few games (ones that run on the 5S just fine so they aren’t demanding) and of course play music. Oh and I suppose make/receive phone calls heh.

That’s probably me just dreaming though.

So yesterday in a TV show a plot point was chum being put in the water to attract sharks and then people thrown in the ocean to get eaten alive. It was an interrogation tactic, plus a grisly end for the cartels enemies I guess.

What did I dream about last night? You guessed it. Being eaten alive by sharks.

Why do I watch procedurals again? /facepalm

Side note, the inaccuracies and alternately either incredibly dense agents or plots so convoluted even I can’t make sense of it, are really starting to bug me. It’s getting so I’m actually rooting for these shows to be cancelled just so I don’t have to watch them anymore. (I watch them with my mum, she hates sci-fi/fantasy and I don’t like pure romance, it’s our only kinda common ground).

Plus I confess to being slightly bitter that these shows go and go and go for hundreds of episodes but so many shows that I personally (so yeah no validity here, just me whining) think are more original, funny, intelligent etc. get cancelled early or only have limited runs.

Wow that is whiny for a Thursday morning. I’m sorry.

@rumple-belle, @ripperblackstaff, @mariequitecontrarie, @theoneandonlylittlebird and @sarashouldbestudying THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH for your thoughtful responses to my ‘should I create a writing sideblog or not?’ post.

The unanimous consensus was that I shouldn’t and as that’s less for me to worry about, I’m going to go with that! 🙂

So how am I going to go about this?

Well first off I’ve added a link to my writing posts (thanks to Sara for the idea). It just forwards to the ‘Sam talks writing’ tag at the moment but I’m contemplating creating a masterlist of writing related stuff. There’s the Once word crawl, plus some pep talks, and there will be more come November when NaNo season starts again. I might even have some cool tips to share from my degree, who knows 🙂

Second I’m planning on implementing “Fanfic Fridays” because I cast my mind back to summer 2016. I had this WIP (The War Within) and pretty much without fail I updated every Tuesday. I recall making myself sit and write because I. Couldn’t. Miss. Posting. Day.

Now this could fail epicly like every other self-imposed deadline in the last couple of years OR it could be the exact structure I need to get back on the horse and do the thing. Thus far my instructions to myself have been project based (e.g. finish X by Y) but what I’m going with this time is “finish anything so long as it’s by Friday”. Only time will tell whether that helps.

Thirdly! Thirdly? I’m going to go back to doing monthly roundups. I stopped doing them out of embarrassment but I think they help, especially with the ‘and next month I will…’ that I tacked on the bottom. I think I actually said in those posts ‘I can’t hit a target that I can’t see’ so maybe it’s time to start actually making those targets again.

Fourthly (this is getting silly now *rolls eyes at self*) I have made a WIP page listing everything that is currently on my list and what the status is.

Finally! In addition to the ‘Sam talks writing’ tag which I’ll dump everything in, I’ll also use extra tags like #myrumbellefic or #mygarcyfic to differentiate between the fandoms because I do have some things that aren’t Rumbelle that I want to write. That way if I’m blathering on about a fanfic for a show you don’t like you can blacklist.

Let’s see how this goes and if you guys have a suggestion of anything writing related you’d like to see from me (besides poor PLL being updated of course) then let me know 🙂

Forget everything I just said. Article 13 was just passed and I have no clue what the consequences will be.

I hope it’s a storm in a teacup and everything will be ok. I’m not good at interpreting legalese and it’s hard to know what is fact and what is fear when reading about it.

However if it is anywhere near as far-reaching and problematic as suggested Europeans might not even be allowed tumblrs anymore. I really don’t know.

I’m not panicking, I’m just confused.

B, darling 🙂 your blog is your blog and I love following whatever you blog about 🙂

rumple-belle replied to your post:
Poll Time

I have a big reply typed out on my phone, but Tumblr mobile is too awful and I need to edit it before I post. The tl;Dr version is this: you do you, and fuck everyone else. Your blog is about you, not your followers.

Thank you both! *hugs*

I don’t really have followers, not like you do. It’s not like people are expecting anything from me and so I’m not worried about that exactly. It’s more I guess my pathological fear of annoying people (*cough* or fear of people in general really).

I would probably suck at a dedicated writing blog anyway because I would be constantly thinking “have I gone on too much about this? I don’t want to be boring.” or “have I been too enthusiastic? I don’t want to make people feel bad.” or “have I been too whiny? I don’t like spreading misery.” etc. and wind up not posting much at all.

Sometimes I know what I want to do but I fall over myself getting in my own way.
