2021: Fandom Year in Review

I haven’t done one of these in years, mostly because I really didn’t do anything for a long time. I’m not finishing this year on a particularly strong note as I sort of spluttered and shuddered to a halt in October and haven’t managed to restart the old engine 🙁

Anyway here’s a detailed breakdown and some mini statistics.

Fanfics written/posted: 14
Fanfics started: 17
Fandoms written in: 3
Number of fanfic words written: 211,726 (including WIPs)
Fanart completed: 4 (or 5 if I count that sketch which I don’t really)
Gifsets posted: 32

Most Popular Fic = and the Brighter Side of Life (with a whopping 52 more kudos than the next closest fic)

Most Popular Gifset = Car Stealing Etiquette (Black Widow / Cap: Winter Soldier Parallel) – 672 notes, a whopping 488 more than the next highest, thanks Marvel 🙂

Most Popular Fanart = The Proposal Part Two (Warehouse 13, Bering and Wells exchange) – 51 notes, so a 42 note difference there.

Links and rambling on everything under the cut 🙂

Intentions vs Result

– I’d intended to do a drawing a month and I did 4, so only 1/3rd of what I said I’d do. The drawing really didn’t go as planned across the board this year. I started to have panic attacks about it, just as I did last year with the writing. I’m hoping it’ll go smoother next year.

– I set no goals with the gifset making (it was a new endeavour, only really learned how this year). However, I might set some goals next year because I still have 53 ideas for sets on my list.

– I have spawned more plot bunnies than I was able to write and I’m ending the year with WIPs which I’m a little annoyed about. However, I stuck to my plan of only posting when stories were complete, so I’m not in any danger of abandoning any fics which is good. I still feel guilty about that from before.

2021 Fanfic

– Choosing Fate (51,735 words, Sanctuary James/John/Helen)
aka the arranged marriage fic. This was the second ‘long-fic’ that I wrote for Sanctuary, the first of course being Our Darkest Hour which I wrote November last year. I didn’t intend for this to be a 50k job but it kinda set the tone for how a lot of my fics were going to go this year – accidentally a 50k.

– Out of the Shadows (11,993 words, Sanctuary Fix-it)
This is a weird fic because it was an ‘alternate’ to a fic I still haven’t written (Shadow Play), indeed it’s in my gdocs as an ‘AU of an AU’. It stands just fine on it’s own so it’s only in my own head that I really wish I’d written Shadow Play and posted them together (one day).

– and the Guardian’s Dilemma (5,405 words, The Librarians Prompt Month)
aka the first of many in which I accidentally a new fandom. I lost my computer, so I had to take a break from my novel and it was prompt month – one of those perfect storm things. I never intended to write for The Librarians because it’s one of those shows where I’m relatively satisfied with canon. However, once I start I can’t stop because I keep thinking of things I want to explore more.

– and the Brighter Side of Life (3,297 words, The Librarians Prompt Month)
This fic surprised me because of how well it was received. I had more comments and kudos on this than any of the others. Maybe because it’s very fluffy? I don’t know but I’m grateful. I don’t write for the comments/kudos but it’s always nice, like a hot drink on a cold day. So thanks everyone 🙂

– and the Moment of Consequence (4,480 words, The Librarians Prompt Month)
In any show there are those pivotal moments and it’s fantastic for fanfic as so many canon-divergence fics can spin from that point. Well with this I did it both ways, an AU ‘what if?’ and also digging into the repercussions that the show never got to explore (still bummed there was no 5th season). Fun times.

– and the Sins of Atlantis (58,658 words, The Librarians/Sanctuary/Stargate)
aka my extremely niche and self-indulgent fic. It’s ridiculously long for being so self-indulgent but I had an absolute blast writing it so I don’t really care. I had a comment last week and I was blown away as to be honest I didn’t expect anyone to read it. I do love this fic. I reread it sometimes and it makes me smile and I’m not sorry.

– and the Outsiders (2,078 words, The Librarians Prompt Month)
This one is actually canon-compliant, sort of a ‘missing moment’ type deal. It also made me really ship Lamia and Cassandra. Before I wrote it I was like “hmm?” about them because maybe yes, maybe no, but after I wrote it I remembered how much lost potential there was in season one. I’m totally going to write more fic with Lamia because it needs to be done.

– and the Inevitable Conflict (2,769 words, The Librarians Prompt Month)
In which I didn’t even really know what I was trying to say. I felt like in the end I was building to some kind of revelation and then it totally fell flat. No matter how many times I looked at it I couldn’t think of a better way to phrase it so I left it. Not really happy with it though :/

– Life Without Purpose (2,089 words, Sanctuary John/Helen)
This was my Zombies in July fic, it’s based off an episode (Pavor Nocturnus) in which everyone dies really. There was a throwaway line in the episode about what happened to John and I just had to explore it a little bit. It’s sad and not my usual fare at all as I like to fix-it and this didn’t fix anything.

– It takes little effort to watch a man carry a load (2,635 words, Sanctuary)
WriYe (my writing community) has something called RaTs (Runaway Tales) which are the most epic prompt lists in existence. Occasionally I generate random numbers and take 3 prompts and attempt to write a oneshot with them. This fic was one of those and it’s angsty, it’s like ‘hello you made it worse’ which again not my usual thing but when the prompts came up, it just had to be done.

– The Tragic Tail (15,935 words, Sanctuary)
Not going to lie I was a bit uncomfortable writing this one as it dealt with the Titanic which was a real life disaster. I read through a lot of the wiki pages and I felt such sorrow at the loss of life, and an impotent powerlessness because I couldn’t change it. I nearly backed out of writing it as I was so uncomfortable, it was the idea that came to me for the MerMay event and I did my best.

– Focused Avoidance (1,939 words, Warehouse 13)
In which I really wonder why I do these things to myself. Rewatching Warehouse 13 for the… I don’t even know I’ve watched it a lot. This time I saw sparks and parallels with Artie and MacPherson and I instantly shipped it. I blame Sanctuary to be honest for grabbing me for the ship of pain, apparently that’s where I live now. Anyway this was a brief oneshot and I’m writing a long crossover fic (with Sanctuary) in which I explore Artie/MacPherson even more. Watch this space.

– Gentlemen of Blood (33,353 words, Sanctuary)
For King and Country really is one of those episodes that just keeps on giving. It was one of the only flashbacks we got to The Five and so I’m obviously obsessed with it. For this fic I blame Skyfall (and I’m not even into James Bond movies) but that moment when he says “and we have people everywhere” and then the dude starts shooting and later M says “a lot of people say that, florists say that, you don’t expect them to have someone in the bloody room”. I just had to run with it and then I made it AU so that it had a happy ending for my ship. I thought this was going to be another 50k job and I’m relieved that it wasn’t.

– Celebrate the Day (1,863 words, Sanctuary)
Written for the Sanctuary flash-fic Christmas exchange, which is a moderated collection and hasn’t been revealed yet. Fics were due on the 25th but the holiday season brings many challenges so I’m sure it’ll be open soon. No more on this because it’s still technically a secret.

2021 Fanart

– James Watson and the Curious Case of the Jarnul
My January drawing to accompany a Sanctuary oneshot I wrote in December (thus didn’t count for my 2021 words even though I technically posted it this year). It’s of James Watson and John Druitt. The pose is a little stiff (I had trouble finding references) but I tried.

– The Proposal (Part Two)
My February drawing, drawn for the Bering and Wells exchange. In which I really hated myself for having chosen to do something with a FULL BACKGROUND because why? It took so long and it doesn’t even look that great. I tried (ongoing theme here) but still ehhh not happy.

– Sketch a Day (Nikola Tesla)
For a couple of months I did Sketch a Day (I also tried the 100 head challenge and did about 6 of them) – I’m good at starting things, terrible at following through but anyway a pencil attempt of Nikola from Sanctuary. Not an official months drawing (though that kinda fell by the wayside too *sigh*), just something I was trying to do on the side.

– Helen and Nikola Adventuring
My March drawing which took forever and turned out crap. Despite setting it as a goal for this year I still haven’t properly settled on an art style and so it all looks so wrong as there’s soft shading on the faces, and more cartoon hard lines on the monster. Helen’s likeness sucks too.

– The Tragic Tail
This was supposed to be my May drawing but I didn’t finish it until August. I tried something new with this (doing it totally in Clip Studio) and I’m reasonably pleased with the background, but the more I look at the mermaid, the worse it gets :/ Once again – I tried.
