Scarborough (Day One)
(This post was written last Thursday but am only posting now because of cheap internet access at the new hotel)
We arrived yesterday (Wednesday) at about six pm. My first impression of the hotel is a flashback to something I’ve seen on TV from the sixties. The lounge area that is immediately visible upon entry into the hotel is very dark, there’s a grand staircase in the middle of the room, the door to the restaurant can be found behind the staircase. The restaurant is a buffet and works on the same kind of system as school dinners. Again, it strikes me as being very typical.
The hotel is on the hill overlooking the seafront and it’s upside-down in a way. The reception and entrance is on floor four and the rooms are on floor two, so to get to the ground level (despite being above ground with a sea view) you have to go up - most bizarre. The lift to get to the rooms is small and scary; it lurches and makes horrible noises. I’m not a big fan of lifts at the best of times and after going in it once I’m never going in it again. I don’t mind two flights of stairs, I’m good with stairs, they don’t get me puffing like running does despite going on them quite fast, must be a muscle group thing.
Today we went out and explored Scarborough, well we didn’t go far. We walked along the entire seafront; I had a tasty hot doughnut while the others had ice-cream. I also took nearly 200 pictures. What can I say; I have an itchy trigger finger. The group split for lunch as mum and I went in search of a small shop like a co-op or something because I wanted a sandwich but can’t buy ready made ones. However, during our search we stumbled across a custom sandwich shop. We got a taxi back to the hotel and the driver gave us a short tour and showed us the way to the swimming pool.
In the afternoon we had intended to go and visit the area where the building is that doubles as the hospital in The Royal. I don’t watch The Royal any longer but I used to and that building along with the Grand Hotel where we’re staying will always be definitively Scarborough for me. I have seen it before and taken pictures but they weren’t terribly good and in the past sifting through them I’ve wished that I’d taken a few different angles. Anyway, we didn’t go this afternoon, mum went to sleep after lunch and I started fiddling with photographs and time went by without permission. It’s 6pm now and we’re currently waiting for my grandparents to ring us to say they’re awake from their afternoon nap. After that we’ll go have dinner. Last night for dinner I had cod and there potato things. I didn’t much like the potato things but the battered cod was really tasty, I hope that something like that will be on the menu again tonight.
Speaking from a later point of view I was sent to find the menu and I didn’t fancy what was on so my grandparents went to dinner on their own and my mum and I went to Tesco for a few bits and found a nice fish and chip shop on the seafront.
